Hi everyone, I just wanted to ask about the use of HRT when testing the thyroid. It is Ok to use it or should I leave it off in the days before the test. I'm on 1 pump of estrogen and 100 mg urtrogestan Thanks

That's an interesting question and I never thought about. I take estrogen only and I have never adjusted my dosing. I think you would want to keep it consistent. We don't want to add more variables or we don't really know what our thyroid results mean.

Thanks for replying Trina, think it's best that I take it as usual.

No, keep taking it. You are on a tiny dose of oestrogen anyway. The smallest dose there is. Why so low?

You want to test your thyroid in it's normal environment, that's why you keep using the HRT.

Thanks for the reply fancypants. To cut a very long story short. I was mistakenly left on Diazapam which messed up my GABA receptors and made me intolerant to Progesterone ( the calming hormone) so I could only manage a small amount. I became estrogen dominant and had bleeds each month ( I'm 62) which had to be assessed for possible cancer. I think all of this messed up my thyroid.Anyway the small dose of HRT seems to work well at stopping the vasomotor symptoms. I was taken up to 7 pumps at one stage by a private gynecologist and I think it caused hyperthyroidism. Nightmare.

Well as long as it's solving some symptoms that's good. I'm just amazed such a small amount can. However you are on the normal continuous HRT dose of progesterone so you have obviously got over the issue with that.

Many women cannot tolerate progesterone including myself regardless if they have been put on diazapam or any other benzo or not. For many women, progesterone is anything but calming. I was put on it by twice by 2 different alternative/private medicine practioners and each time I was a horrible anxious mess. I have tried all forms and doses and it is a definite a "no go" for me. I had a hysterectomy, so thankfully I don't have to take it. I don't know if you are on the menopause/permimenopause hub of Thyroid Unlocked, but you will find MANY women who hate the week they need to use progesterone.

I would say that 7 pumps of estrogen is a lot more than most women would need, but I doubt it would make you hyperthyroid since most women need to increase their thyroid when taking estrogen.

I am still trying to find my sweet spot with the thyroid. I am on day 10 of 75 mcg of T4 and have been on 5mcg of T3 for about 3 months now. The waiting for it to level out and then to test is terrible when you just want to feel better. I have had some improvements, but not where I hope to be yet.

I take 2 mg of oral estrogen and 1 pump of Estrogel and I am 59 years old. So a gynecologist has helped me get my estrogen up and now I have an endocrinologist helping me get my thyroid up. I don't have a lot of confidence in him, so trying to find another one to help me.

Hang in there! You will get it figured out but don't change more than one hormone at a time. If I were you, I would leave the sex hormones alone until I got the thyroid figured out at this point.

Thanks for your reply, yes I'm going to leave the hrt as it is for the moment as the bleeding is now almost gone. Hi hope you manage to find your sweet spot soon. It is so hard all this isn't it. 🙏

Sooty101, Hormones (i.e. sex and thyroid) need to work in harmony with each other, so definitely don't change anything with your HRT when you do your thyroid test. You need to know what your thyroid levels are with your current HRT dose/s.
