Hormone replacement therapy to be offered over the counter in UK

I really do have to ask, will this end up with those who need it being more likely to have to buy it themselves?

Obviously, in England, this cost would sometimes be offset against a prescription charge. But in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, it would be a real increase in cost by the total price.

It’s just a specific vag dryness tablet that will be available as far as I’m aware.

My pharmacist tells me that there is a move to sell normal dose HRT OTC. eg Oestrogel.

I think this is the first step. With more to follow.

Inevitably. The thin end of the wedge.

"Don't bother your doctor - this is normal; you can buy something at the pharmacy."

Sorry. Got my cynical head on today.

I really, really wish that T4 and T3 could be sold over the counter without prescription in the UK.

Even just T4 OTC would be good. If they can do it in some European countries, we should too.

That it is essential should be an argument for it being available. Not a reason to lock it up and make it difficult to get hold of.

You can buy any form of hrt OTC in Spain and as much as you want, without a prescription. They have a very good pharmacy system where you can talk at length to the pharmacist. The products are good quality, non generics. They also have well woman clinics which cover breast and womb scans.

To have the option to buy more medicationc OTC can increase access, increase self management and hopefully allow medical professionals to concentrate on diagnosis and management of more complex issues and also helping people who can't self medicate for whatever reason.

Yeah and why can't we have t3 like diabetics can self medicate with insulin. And another thing : if you can buy othe stuff that can be dangerous at very high doses ( asprin ,codine paracetamol etc etc ) why not t3 and t4?
