phronsias, Are you taking any thyroid medication?

Yes, 60 micro grams of T3 daily

Hi, I haven't experienced your level of discomfort, on my scalp but have had issues with discomfort through extremely dry skin, have you thought abut trying a natural oil ? I personally haven't used shampoo for years, I use a very light non silicone no nasty chemicals conditioner to cleanse my hair as it has non of the harsh cleansing agents in it, only wash it once a week ...to restyle i just dampen it ..I also have used very tiny amounts of coconut oil [ the stuff you cook with ] to cleanse my hair and scalp . as for rubbing something in to soothe itching and dryness again pure oils Rosehip, is my first choice for everything with absolutely no additives not cheap but very little needed and I have found this regime has helped with hair loss and condition , hope you find a solution that works for you :)

I have this issue and tried a few. These are the ones to try:

Eucerin 250 ml Shampoo amzn.eu/d/5Cvt7y3 (in fact the whole Eucerin range is pretty fantastic for hair, scalp and skin).

This is also worth ago:

Aveeno Itchy Scalp Shampoo with Rosewater & Chamomile for Dry hair and Scalp 354ml amzn.eu/d/arHFLFQ (there are a few different scents)

And, finally, this:

Neutrogena T/Gel Therapeutic Shampoo Treatment for Itchy Scalp and Dandruff, Fresh rain,250 ml amzn.eu/d/0c9DgC5 (use this wisely as it also leads to dermatitis but does work in this funny sort of way).

P.S. mine psoriasis hasn’t been cured yet with Levothyroxine but I’ve only been on it for 4 weeks approx. I can say my eczema on some parts of my body is beginning to improve so I hope other symptoms won’t be far off from resolving somewhat at least.

Thank you to everyone who replied!!!

I read sea buckthorn oil can help, is this true?

phronsias, Often skin/scalp conditions do need to be treated from within, rather than at the external location. High strength dandruff shampoos contain selenium, so it seems like a good idea to try taking a selenium supplement, as discussed in the post by Delgor healthunlocked.com/beyond-p...

Coconut oil directly on the scalp cleared all my thick dry scalp completely!

I would also recommend Aveeno hair products. They are a bit pricey but if you have a Boots advantage card cheaper or on Amazon. I use the fresh greens one I think it is and have noticed a big difference

Hello,

I’m sorry to hear of your discomfort. It’s really difficult to find a product that brings you relief and that you will not react to.

The scalp can be so sore and itchy with thyroid flare ups!

I, like you have tried many but the only one to bring me any form of relief is called ‘Hopes relief’ It comes with both shampoo and conditioner.

They are quite pricey but they work very well and bring much relief and calming to the scalp. They are all natural ingredient and do not contain the preservatives that irritate the scalp further.

You only need little shampoo as it’s liquid, shampoo twice and lather up well. Conditioner the ends.

All the best

Hopes relief shampoo and conditioner for troubled scalps

So looks like you have lots of suggestions , but here's another one that may alleviate discomfort, I have used cold pressed olive oil , massage into scalp leave on 15 minutes or so and shampoo out ... A product which sells on amazon is good too Ayurvedic Formula Auromere shampoo bar., lasts long also ...also good to get enough healthy fats in diet avocados, coconut etc but maybe you already do that... hypo symptoms, dryness are a constant thing...to cope with , hang in there

I have terrible dry scalp too; tried all the anti dandruff things, oils etc but nothing seems to work and it’s back the next day. I am working with a functional medicine practitioner and we are trying ti get to the bottom of this whilst healing my gut - I do think it could be linked to gut infection / guy dysbiosis.

I find soaking in a warm bath with half a bottle of white vinegar helps immensely. Sometimes I rinse it out of my hair (Without shampoo, just water), sometimes I don't. I find my skin, scalp and hair like the ph/light acid wash of the vinegar. Sometimes I'll also rub a bit of rosemary oil or plant derived squalene on my scalp to moisturize it without making my hair oily. The Ordinary is a brand with good and reasonably priced Squalene with the easy to apply dropper.

Thank you very much for all the replies! I have started using T-Gel shampoo if that doesnt work I will work my way through the suggestions above. I would really love to go to the hairdressers but Im too embarrassed .

Thanks again

hi there

Perhaps this is a reaction to the specific thyroid medication?

I had stopped taking my levothyroxine 50mg by Mercury Pharma for a couple of months as I was feeling exceptionally unwell. After a couple of months I felt I needed to go back on Levo and was prescribed 25mg to start with (also by mercury pharma). Within 48hrs of restarting I developed a chronic dry scalp which I never had before.

Hope you get sorted.

Paul
