Thyroid UK has been approached by a journalist, Yasmeen Eltahan, at the City University of London who is looking to film a documentary about the link between body and mind (how your mind can manifest symptoms in the body).
Yasmeen explained to me that while the body/thyroid dysfunction is 100% valid, certain life events may have triggered the thyroid condition. It does not apply to everyone, but it has been backed up by research.
The documentary will include psychiatrists validating those who live with autoimmune disease and their symptoms while also talking about the mind-body connection that isn't always considered.
' (how your mind can manifest symptoms in the body).'
Either I am misunderstanding, or these words are extremely poorly chosen. Many members here have been told that their symptoms are 'all in their head' when in fact their symptoms are caused by thyroid dysfunction.
Yasmeen Eltahan needs to clarify what exactly she means, and what she is expecting from thyroid patients that will help her study?
I hate to say this but the question may be a result of picking up ‘fixed ideas’ which seem to abound about hypothyroid patients. In my experience journalists can have pretty superficial knowledge about lots of issues. For all we know she could have picked up this idea from a superficially educated doctor.
Update for RedApple greygoose arTistapple lynmynott and anyone else curious.
We emailed and then we had a quick 20 minute zoom.
Yasmeen is a warm friendly kind and genuine young woman, the documentary is for her Uni course, its being submitted as part of her studies and may be entered into competitions. It is not for general TV broadcast.
She herself suffers with a chronic pain condition and all she wanted was for me to talk about my experiences of being diagnosed, what helped, what the worst of it was, a little about mental health during (nothing about prior) and she is keen to show the similarities between conditions. She has someone with juvenile arthritis, her own experiences, we talked medications, gut health, gas lighting (she has personal experience of being told her condition is in her head).
She would love to hear from more people if anyone would like to talk about their experiences, you can help her with the research without being in the documentary.
