Hashimoto's Heart Research - more participants needed

Thyroid UK members are being offered a free training as part of a study called ‘Hashimoto’s heart’.

The study is a collaboration between Hashimoto.help and Maastricht University in the Netherlands.

The mind and body, individual and environment have long been seen as separate entities. This online training takes the psychoneuroimmunology perspective. This perspective is based on the fundamental unity of the body’s systems. It is the function of these systems to help you stay healthy. The immune system is a part of that.

Patients with autoimmune disease have a different response to stress. They register more stress. Stress does not just come from outside of our body but also emerges as a result of our internal experiences, which influences our self-evaluation, self-identity, self-presentation and self-control. The internal and external stressors are registered in the same way in our body but the internal stressors are present 24 hours a day. The internal stressors have developed to protect us, to make sure we survive although in the long run they can make us sick.

By reprogramming the system, neurobiology, psychological and physiological changes will take place. You will be able to differentiate threat from non-threat and consequently the immune system will balance. You will get yourself back, feeling energetic and vital.

The training provides:

• understanding of the role of emotions as part of the immune system

• inner resources development

• experiential exercises and self-discovery

• development of life knowledge and skills

This is an excellent opportunity to learn about yourself and your body.

To be accepted as part of the study, you will need to be over 18; have been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s by a clinician; be a member of Thyroid UK or one of our online communities i.e. HealthUnlocked, Facebook or Twitter; have a good command of English; have access to the internet and be able to work with a computer.

Once you have applied, you will need to sign a consent form and complete a questionnaire.

This may seem a lot of work but the research produced at the end of the training will be very useful so do please take part if you can.

If you are interested in taking part in the study please send email to: info@hashimoto.help

Hi Lyn,

not sure if I would qualify as I am not officially been diagnosed with hashi's.

My AB levels are high, but not over range, but some say because they are so high I could have hashi's.

What do you think.

THYROGLOBULIN ANTIBODY 103.000 IU/mL 0.00 - 115.00

THYROID PEROXIDASE ANTIBODIES 32.2 IU/mL 0.00 - 34.00

Unfortunately, you wouldn't qualify. :-( You are within the range in these tests and a doctor would probably say you don't have Hashi's. However, levels can change depending on stress and diet etc. I think everyone should be tested for antibodies so that they know if they might have problems in the future.

I did not think I would qualify but thought I would offer just in case.

Hi Lucylocks and Lynn

Back in 2014 I had high TPO of 39 and recently had a check of TPO again when it confirmed I was in normal range. Im told on another forum that still have Hashimotos and always will have, its just that Im in remission apparently which is a good thing of course. Have you had previous checks which were out of range. Not sure if I would meet the criteria though in view of this? As we know TPO and TSH can alter all the time especially with Hashi flare-ups.

Hi Jane,

Thank you for your reply.

No I have never had antibodies over range, but very near the top of range.

I was told on another forum because they are high in range, hashi's could not be ruled out.

Once you have one result over range then yes you are classed as having hasi's even if other results are under range as apparently they alter all the time.

It's centred on Hashi's only. We often get people asking for help with their studies so keep an eye open for one on Grave's in the future.

I have just emailed them
