Hashimotos - Feel full

Hi there,

Can anyone relate to often feeling full and not as a result of eating too much? I frequently feel like the meal I have eaten the evening before remains undigested and full to the top of my throat.

I assume that because your metabolism slows down and digestion becomes slower that this may be the reason for the way I feel?

Any thoughts on how I can resolve this? I am certainly not overeating and in fact my in-take of food is my less than it used to be. Three meals a day and with nothing too heavy and undigestible.

Thanks.

Slow motility is very common in hypothyroidism. Other than eating 'light foods' what have you tried?

If you have Hashi's its worth eliminating gluten and also sometime dairy needs to be excluded too.

This was really bad for me years ago and I used something called the Fast Tract diet which basically reduces refined carbohydrates. There are other similar diets to look at such as GAPS or the Specific Carbohydrate diet. healthline.com/nutrition/ga...?

There is a lot to do to heal gut function including taking a good probiotic, eliminating FODMAPs that you are sensitive to as well. monashfodmap.com/ibs-centra...

What were your last blood results and what dose are you on?

When hypo we get low stomach acid which means we cannot absorb vitamins well from our food, regardless of a great diet. For thyroid hormone to work well we need OPTIMAL levels of vitamins. Have you recently or could you ask your GP to test levels of ferritin, folate, B12 & D3?

Sounds like you might not be on high enough dose levothyroxine

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking

What are your most recent thyroid and vitamin results

Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Low stomach acid can prevent the efficient breakdown of foods in the stomach before the onward journey into the duodenum. So food remains longer in the stomach - it ferments and its possible this causes a feeling of fullness.
