I was given a different brand of liothyronine and after taking it for a few weeks I felt my old thyroid symptoms coming back- the worst being anxiety/depression I have now gone back to taking my old brand how long should it take for me to feel ok again.
liothyronine : I was given a different brand of... - Thyroid UK
liothyronine
I am not medically qualified but request the pharmacist to give you the one you prefer as it helps to reduce your symptoms.
Usually they try to source what suits our body but sometimes we have to take a different liothyronine. You may be fortunate and find another T3 that also works for you.
I cannot state how long it will take for you to find a suitable T3.
The same has happened to me; swapping from Morningside to Roma. I think the latter must be a cheaper option. What is the Liothyronine that you have had adverse symptoms with Margaret?
Interesting isn't it, no saving if they have to up our dose!
I've been on Roma and though it feels less effective my bloods have come back much the same as Tiromel?
Roma is the make my gp put me on and definitely all my old symptoms started coming back, I have gone back onto Morningside which I hope will pick me up again. I didn’t have any problem with my doctor who just told me to go back on the morningside one so I have wondered whether other people have had the same reaction.
It might be worth completing a yellow card for the liothyronine that clearly wasn’t working for you. Sometimes it can be a manufacturing issue that needs resolving ASAP. Details are here: healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...
I’d use the category “defective”.
Hi, Sorry you’re experiencing problems I’ve had that too. The only brand I can take is by Advanz Pharma they are distributed by Alliance. I have no problems with this whose is the original I was prescribed in 2004. Good luck
Which brands are you talking about?
Roma is the one that didn’t suit me so now back on Morningside. I think Teva was my favourite unfortunately doctors don’t believe you when you say that the brand doesn’t suit you.
Would anyone know the fillers in Teva T3 please ?
hi, the fillers in teva t3 are obviously 20 mcg t3 , microcrystalline cellulose, maize starch, pregelatinised starch, colloidal anhydrous silica and magnesium stearate. Jo xx
Thank you so much. Would you by any chance know if the 5mcg dose has the same fillers too?
I’ve just googled 5’s and they have loads of fillers. Much more than 20’s. Jo xx
What make of 5 microgram tablet are you referring to?
And the number of excipients (fillers and other ingredients) isn't necessarily an issue.
SigmaPharm have:
Calcium sulfate dihydrate, corn starch, gelatin, magnesium stearate and mannitol.
Morningside have:
Lactose monohydrate, partially pregelatinized maize starch, spray dried acacia, sodium chloride and magnesium stearate.
Teva have
Microcrystalline cellulose, maize starch, pregelatinised starch, colloidal anhydrous silica and magnesium stearate.
Advanz/Mercury Pharma have:
Lactose, maize starch, powdered acacia, sodium chloride, magnesium stearate, industrial methylated spirit, and purified water.
In both Morningside and Sigmapharm (the only ones who do 5 microgram tablets) the excipients are the same in both 5 and 20 microgram tablets. (It's possible the precise ratios of the ingredients are different but that seems unlikely.)
helvella's medicines document can be found here:
helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines
helvella has created, and tries to maintain, a document containing details of all thyroid hormone medicines in the UK and, in less detail, many others around the world.
This link takes you to a page which has direct links to the document from Dropbox and Google Drive, and QR codes to make it easy to access from phones.

teva as l thought that was what was meant carrying on from the 20’s of teva. Jo xx
See my reply on this thread.
Thank you so much Helvella. Very very helpful. Would you know Helvella if the 5mcg Teva can be easily split?Thank you in advance.
There is no Teva 5 microgram liothyronine! Only Morningside and Sigmapharm (in the UK).
Afraid I have no experience of handling T3 of any make.
Hi Margaret, I too have problems with different brands of Liothyronine. I have been on Morningside 50msgms split into three times a day very successfully for many years. Now suddenly Boots Pharmacy tell me that they can no longer supply me with the 20mcgms. So the doctors and the Boots pharmacy agreed to supply me with all 10mcgmcps tablets but so far hasn’t been able to produce the correct prescription for me to have this!
I am taking another unknown brand at the moment but I have gone downhill whilst on this I now have to wait another three days for the Boots pharmacy to speak to the doctors dispensary to hopefully get the correct prescription.
It seems crazy to me to spend millions of pounds keeping all the old people alive during Covid pandemic, but now it appears that they are trying to kill us off!
i agree totally with what you have said I was asked about taking this other liothyronine medication which I did agree to but I then started getting my old symptoms back the doctor then said I had to have a blood test I did reply and said I wondered whether it was the new tablet she didn’t argue and say no it was then that I decided to go back on my original tablet - fortunately I still had some, I my symptoms started to improve. But I don’t know how you feel but when I have started to go down hill it takes me a few weeks to feel right again,
that last sentence Margaret is what I have been saying for a long time. I am feeling very weak now, and sleeping most of the day. I just hope they can sort it out tomorrow!
