Thyroxine brands

What is going on with brands!! I have Wockhardt and have always found it to be really good. Am allergic to Teva as it brings me out in a rash. Can't get hold of Wockhardt anywhere but surprise, surprise everywhere seems to stock Teva - could it be cheaper by any chance?(nothing surprises me anymore?).GP agreed to name Wockhardt on my prescription but still no one can guarantee that can supply it 🤬. Rant over!😊

Yes strongly suspect pharmacies can get a good deal on Teva

How GP needs to write prescription to specify a particular brand levothyroxine

Thank you SlowDragon. If GP does this then I assume pharmacist gets higher rate for the prescription? Still issue in actually sourcing it tho 😖. Have emailed Wockhardt this evening as well asking for their ideas - looks like quite a few people on here would prefer their product.

yes….this means pharmacy gets paid the full cost

Ah that makes sense. Thank you👍

There seems to be intermittent supply issues with all the UK levo tablet and liquid brands. Teva is the least popular, so availability less affected I guess.

These issues are being experienced by those using other medications too. This situation is not confined to levothyroxine.

One non-thyroid medicine I use will not be back until April this year. Last available June 2022.

Even my prescription for it has expired while in possession of the pharmacy.

Truly rubbish supply issues.

Local pharmacist could never get Wockhardt even after GP had written that brand only. Luckily the Pharmacist in the next village now orders it in and so far I have had no problems. Have just put my script in for pick up next week and will send through an update if there are any issues. Hopefully will help to see if it is a cost or supply issue. I wrote to Wokhardt once asking why they can’t supply 100mcg strength although never got a reply. I found this supply by ringing around local pharmacies as this is the best brand for me and I struck lucky with the one in the next village which is smaller and not part of a chain (own pharmacy is part of a chain). Hope you get it sorted x

Thank you, can't believe we have to do this!

I’ve got to drive round this morning to find Accord or Wockhardt. Got it named on prescription but local pharmacist said Teva currently cheapest so that’s what they order and could be different next time

Exactly the same situation I am in atm 😖

I went on a wockhardt hunt last year. A smaller independent pharmacy came up trumps. Buxton and grant in Bristol. I wonder if they would do a postal service for you?

Thank you, will try this if I can't get a local source.

Buxton & Grant definitely do postal service - I've used it. See details on Thyroid UK website. Very helpful.

Although the info on that page does state ' the brands of levothyroxine change each month, depending on who has tendered for that month,' so presumably they are still subject to the same issues as other pharmacies when it comes to being able to offer a consistent supply of a particular brand.

in the usa the pharmacy gets the cheapest brand They changed mine from Mylan to Teva. I had the doctor prescribe brand name only maybe that will help.

Just to note that Teva levothyroxine in the USA is different to Teva levothyroxine in the UK!

Both are identified in my thyroid medicines document.

helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines

I have created, and try to maintain, a document containing details of all thyroid hormone medicines in the UK and, in less detail, many others around the world.

I’ve got the same problem. I changed pharmacy as they would hold on to a prescription for ages and then sent Teva instead of Wockhardt. I’m currently trying to get my Wockhardt 25’s. I wish they’d make 50’s as well. Good luck 🤞

I had this problem when my pharmacy said they couldn’t obtain it. I emailed Wockhardt and they said if my Pharmacist was willing to ring them they would send it direct to the pharmacy and invoice their normal wholesaler direct. I asked my pharmacist if he would/could do this and he very kindly agreed, what a relief. I take 100mcg in 25mcg’s as they don’t do 100mcg. Maybe you could try this and see if you have a pharmacist would help you like mine did. Good luck.

I had exact same problem, chain pharmacies wouldn't/couldn't supply Wockhardt. I found a very obliging independent pharmacist who now issues them. Like you, I found I tolerated them the best and was so relieved when I was able to get them, it felt like winning the lottery! Its unecessary stress all round, good luck in acquiring them.

Thank you, looks like independent, proper pharmacists could be our salvation in a mad world 🤞
