Armour Thyroid Tablets

I was taking Armour thyroid 2 grains daily for approx 10ths and doing really well on it but the cost became too much. I’ve tried a product available in the U.K. at a much lower price but just don’t feel settled on it. I’m thinking of going back to Armour and have noticed that it is a lot cheaper to buy 4 grain tabs and halve them. This would save over £400 pa.

The question is do I take a 4 grain tab every other day or break them in half and take half's each day?

I do know from experience they do not break evenly in half and can crumble but is it essential to be exactly half each day or is the average of 4 grains over 2 days ok?

Thanks.

With NDT it’s important to take the same amount each day (because of the shorter half life of the T3 in the tablet). So taking the tablet every other day probably won’t work out very well—you’ll be giving your body T3 one day and none the next and that‘s not something your body will be too keen on.

However, I’d say what you’re proposing in taking half a tablet each day is absolutely fine to do. There’ll be some minor differences if the halves are slightly different sizes but hopefully not enough to be too big an issue. I’d do it, put it that way!

I find it’s actually easier to break Armour tablets in two with my fingers rather than using a pill cutter—the pill cutter just leaves a pile of dust.

It’s so expensive at the moment isn’t it? Eye-wateringly so. :(

Hi Jazzw. Thanks for the reply. I was breaking the 2 grain tabs in half when swapping over to the other stuff and like you found a pill cutter left a pile of dust so ended up just breaking them with finger and thumbs like yourself.

I’ll go ahead and order some 4 grain tabs and see how it goes. I knew the half life of T4 was ok to go every other day but wasn’t sure about the T3 so thanks for the heads up on that.

Eye-wateringly expensive indeed, costing me about 10% of my pension but when on the Armour it was the best I’d felt ever so worth the price…I guess!

Thanks again.
