Gluten free

Hi everyone. I've decided to go gluten free. I've been tested and I'm negative. I thought I would try it to see if it helps with my psoriasis and bloating. I've been GF nearly 2 weeks now and I have seen an improvement in my stomach. How long after cutting out gluten does it really start to show?

Some people see immediate improvements, others it’s more slow steady reduction in symptoms

Perhaps 6-12 months to improve brain fog

Retest thyroid levels 6-8 weeks after any significant diet changes

For the stomach bloating and itchy bum it was pretty instant. I’ve noticed when I have something likely come into contact (eg. fried in a gluteny fryer without thinking when I’m a restaurant or something) then it takes about 2 weeks to work through, first bloating and reflux within hours, loose stools for days, brainfog for weeks, pains &a ches. Good luck! This thread had some helpful stuff in healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Some years ago I was tested for food intolerances. They said that I'm not coeliac, but I have various food intolerances, the main ones are oats, wheat and alcohol. I think there's a technical term for this, but I can't remember what it is.

I took the test because I was getting stiff joints and I felt that I would prefer to treat it with a change of diet rather than life long medication. After about 2 or 3 months of my revised diet my joints were much better, but I also realised that I hadn't had the bloating and stomach trouble which had plagued me most of my life - bonus!

Can I suggest that you go gluten free, but use the gluten free foods as a way of avoiding wheat and oats. Personally I avoid 'gluten free oats', as it's the oats not the gluten which upset me. You'll find plenty of these in the Free From section.

I found out some years later that I'm also sensitive to potato. Unfortunately potato starch is often used in GF food. I was surprised to find it in stock powder. You can imagine that I have to do a lot of reading labels.

Stick with it. It takes time to clear your body of the stuff that disagrees with you, so be patient. For me it was a gradual improvement over 2 or 3 months. Years later I can tell if I've had something that disagrees with me, particularly if I have it every day, such as the 'inactive' ingredients in regular pills.

Good luck.

I didnt expect to see improvements, but within a week heartburn had subsided to the point where I could sleep lying down again, bloating went down over two weeks to a month. This all happened whilst fighting to get on a full replacement dose of levo. Fell off wagon over christmas and itching and heartburn resumed and I call gluten poo-glue does the opposite for me. Can eat oats but only a little for the same reason so swear off them generally or compensate with lost of fruit and veg to up the soluble fibre content that day.
