Sky high Iodine result??

I posted previously and hopefully the link below will show that post. Bottom line is my partner was on 4 drops Lugols Iodine via patch test via Naturopath for thyroid, she felt worse with that treatment and stopt the iodine drops and the Naturopath on 15 Sept 22, we did a Genova urine iodine test on 25 Oct 22 to see if actually deficient, she wasnt the result was 322with a range of 100-199 ug/L. We repeated the iodine urine test again on 6 Dec 22 and the result was much higher at 681, she did not change any diet or supplements and hadnt taken iodine since Sept 22. I spoke with Genova incase lab or test error , they said no. Does anyone why this could have happened, I suspect its a error and plan to retest. The problem is it takes so long to get the labs back (a month) and she wants to start on Armour 1/4grain asap but wondering if its wise to start now in view of high iodine result. All views welcome.

There's one simple thing to do right away. Stop the Lugol's entirely. If your partner has some working thyroid, excess iodine inhibits the thyroid from making T4 and converting to T3. It can cause thyroid storm, when everything goes haywire. If your partner has no thyroid, then Lugol's is completely useless, as there is no iodine required, rather oral T4 and/or T3.

if you read the post again you will see she stops the iodine 15 Sept

If you find my last post a week or so ago, you'll note my level also continued to rise a bit (to 319) despite reducing iodine supplement to <<RDA. So maybe there's a lag?I await a response from Genova re value of testing (urine or serum).

I wondered about poss lag but the jump seems excessive, we look forward to hearing more re serum/urine, I also wonder if Genova are the only ones doing iodine tests

You could Google for private urine iodine tests but do make sure that they are non-loading tests, ie you do not take some iodine before the test.

Oky thanks re tip on non loading, I will post further developments

Yes keep us posted via this forum and/or private messages. There seems to be significant uncertainties re iodine and not just the relevance of urine and serum testing. For example, looking at the record you've posted, my level could ride despite having stopped supplementing.

Hi any updates your end eg iodine retest, partner's symptoms? I've now got feedback re urine/serum testing after communicating with key parties including Genova and TUK.

Excuse the pun but the outcome is "cloudy" at best!..but enables a plan.

Unless others reading this are keen to know more, maybe best we communicate by pm?

we haven’t done a retest yet as we also think the picture is a bit cloudy, I just skimmed Dr Myhills new book on thyroid and there’s a section on iodine, she recommends iodine test must be loaded , so a bit confused as Seaside Suzy kindly advised to avoid loaded. As for symptoms, she just started armour and slowly increasing at 1/4 grain per fortnight, she is still on 1/2 grain so no improvement yet, she defo doesn’t feel iodine poisoned which she is allegidly if her iodine is 600.

The summary of my investigation is that no one knows which test measures iodine status, if any. Personally I think that trends should be identified so I'm likely to retest urine via non loading Genova just because that's the test I've done in recent years. So it should indicate if the iodine is leaving my system or not. Not sure yet what to do if it isn't!
