She also has a website:

Who Writes Tired Thyroid?

Barbara Lougheed for web My name is Barbara Lougheed and I became hypothyroid after radioactive iodine treatment (RAI) for Graves’ disease in 1993. I was exhausted from the high heart rate and insomnia that is common in hyperthyroidism, and glad that RAI “fixed” my problem. I was unaware of the potential side effects of RAI and fortunate that my doctor gave me a relatively low dose. However, I now needed thyroid hormone replacement for the rest of my life, and finding the correct dose is trickier than doctors would have you believe. I have been on levothyroxine (T4, like Synthroid), liothyronine (T3, like Cytomel), natural desiccated thyroid (Armour, Nature-throid, Erfa’s Thyroid, and NP Thyroid), and combinations of these medications. I am also menopausal, and use compounded topical bi-est cream and progesterone.

I have not read the book but have read a little of what is (or has been) online.

Thanks hellvella

From the little you read did it give you a sense of accuracy/truth - whatever you want to call it

I think she makes some very acute observations and has written some good explanations and discussions.

All thyroid books, articles, webpages, etc., need to be taken as just a part of the picture. Like the curate's egg, most of them are at best good in parts! :-)

my mum loved the parsons nose she always said ‘like the curates egg, good in parts!’ as she gnawed through the tough bits! I’ve never heard anyone else use the phrase till now 😁

well I never Dr Bendor Grosvenor on Britain’s lost masterpieces has just utttered that very phrase! I did wonder if I might start hearing it being used now it’s on the radar so to speak ….

I've used it - very occasionally - forever. (Well, since I learned of it. I *think* from something by GK Chesterton, possibly All Is Grist, A Book of Essays, first published 1931 gkc.org.uk/gkc/books/GKC_Al... - but I think more likely one of his other books.)

So lucky to still be able to read novels! I just fall asleep I presume reading is now too taxing.

I read GKC back in the late 60s/early 70s! :-)

Had to look up the book, though!

I couldn’t even find the book to look anything up in it! Why does hypothyroidism make one highly disorganised where before you were super organised and efficient. I notice hypothyroid pals are similarly afflicted. It must muck up brain connections or storage areas in the brain that allowed one to be systematic. That’s what I’ve lost No longer sytematic but chaotic - weird.

Hello Noelnoel ;

Yes I have the book - i also have Graves Disease and have gone through the same process of RAI thyroid ablation and the strap line says it all -

From Hyper to Hypo to Healing - Breaking the TSH rule : and why I ordered the book.

Not really interested in reading so many case histories as I found within but picked up enough common sense thoughts to reinforce my own growing suspicions as to my own health issues at the time in around 2016/17 .

Also read Elaine Moore's first book - Graves Disease A Practical Guide - and then purchased a laptop and found Elaine's website which I believe the most complete of all the research I undertook for myself : - elaine-moore.com

T'was a challenge as I'm dyslexic and when not optimally medicated thought I was also dealing with dementia :

Graves, post RAI thyroid ablation in 2005 and now self medicating and much improved especially in my cognitive functions and have no dementia and my dyslexia not such a challenge.

Good for you pennyannie in taking charge. Frightening I would think, to suspect you had dementia but rewarding to now see change and improvement

I have Hashi’s and doing well (for the moment at least) but always interested to hear real stories

Thank you for the link. Haven’t heard of Elaine Moore but will take a look
