You shouldn't self supplement with iron. You should have an iron panel carried out which consists of
Serum iron
Transferrin saturation percentage
Total Iron Binding Capacity
Ferritin
This would show if you have iron deficiency. You can have low ferritin with or without iron deficiency. If you have good levels of serum iron and saturation then supplementing with iron can take them too high and too much iron is as bad as too little.
It would also be useful to have a full blood count as this would show if you have anaemia, you can have iron deficiency with or without anaemia.
If you don't have iron deficiency, just low ferritin, then you can help raise your ferritin level by eating liver regularly, maximum 200g per week due to it's high Vit A content, also liver pate, black pudding, and including lots of iron rich foods in your diet
