Collagen Supplements

Released On:24 Nov 2022

Available for over a year

It’s one of the most talked-about cosmetic products but what’s the evidence that collagen supplements really do slow the visible signs of the ageing process? Listener Jo got in touch wanting to know if the collagen supplement she’s spending £53 per month on will live up to its claim of reducing wrinkles, while promoting “glossy hair and plump dewy skin.” Other listeners asked whether it can help with joint aches and pains, or strengthen nails? Greg Foot sets out to answer all these questions by speaking to a leading consultant dermatologist as well as the co-founders of two of the biggest companies selling collagen supplements, Absolute Collagen and Ingenious Beauty. This series, we’re testing and investigating your suggested wonder-products. If you’ve seen an ad, trend or fad and wonder if there’s any evidence to back up a claim, drop us an email to sliced.bread@bbc.co.uk or you can send us a voice note to our new WhatsApp number: 07543 306807.

helvella,

Great informative discussion about the uptake of supplemented collagen, and interesting he said it’s not the supplemented collagen that directly brings about benefit but the changes it instigates within the body.

My own research has concluded that smaller supplemented amounts may be useful in maintaining skin hydration but for improved bone health improvement the much larger required doses may also bring unwanted change. The collagen being hydrolysed provides intensity and such high amounts of glutamine that risk increasing cell activity in those with cancer risks. And I guess that is why apart from the economics, the aim to get as much collagen utilised from the smallest amount of supplemented as indicated in the talk.

Obviously glutamine is in many foods and we produce our own but it’s the large amounts of additional where problems have been seen. Then further reading (not involving supplemented collagen at all 😬) was about how supplementing glutamine in cancer patients with muscle wastage can be beneficial due to cancer cells ability to recruit all the body's supply of glutamine from muscle.

It's all so extremely complex but good this attention is being brought to supplemented collagen as it is now contained in a lot of products, and I love this programs SB or BS grading system 🤣.

You can at least listen to them easily! I find so many podcasts/programs shout, are in unpleasant accents, etc., making them unpleasant.

Yes, especially if they get really excited or cross and you are having to listen through headphones. Ouch!
