Hi

I had a swollen lymph gand in May went to doctor she said it was related to thyroid. It remained same size until a month ago and is now a big hard lump next to my tyroid on the side of my neck. I had ultrasound. Results show throid nodules and degeneration of the lymph gland. Now I'm having Mri on lymph gland and ent consultation for nodules. I'm quite worried. Thanks for reading.

Thyroid nodules are extremely common

May or may not be affecting thyroid function

Has GP tested thyroid levels via blood test

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested.

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis)

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Thank you for your comprehensive reply. I will be seeing my doctor next week. My main concern is the swollen lymph node. Is it a separate thing or connected to the thyroid problem.

I’ve a 5cm nodule and had lots of neck scans & and and CT uptake scan to look at function.

Mine is hyper functioning but no autoimmune.

I’ve never had issue with lymph glands.  I’ve also not had issue with breathlessness when lying down.

When you had a scan did they mention of the thyroid was swollen or growing  downward?

Any thyroid swelling might be the causing your breathlessness.

 Have you had function tested?
