Hi there, I dont have the ans for you...my story is....after increasing natural thyroid hormones I should have felt more energised but still very fatigued and then left gland swelled hugely ...I am being tested for Epstein Barr Virus. Perhaps its the case for you too? I can let you know what the results are as im still awaiting. I have raised ALT which raises for many disease states but epstein barr is included. Go well :)

PS, I am getting a thyroid ultrasound because there was so much swelling. Hopefully it will give peace of mind if nothing else. The riased ALT could be a response to the NDT bit only waiting will reveal the ans!

Hi SybilB. :) Okay my ultrasound apparently showed nada. My left thyroid globe is a little larger than the right but apparently both normal.

My epstein barr tests are inconclusive as you need to test for 4 antibodies and they only tested for 3!!! So I may have had a reactivated EBV but now i wont know.

In the meantime I also have POTS which means by heart rate can go very high. This can cause my left carotid artery in neck to bulge and that is another reason why i have lumpy left neck!

I was very fatigued and sick at the time of writing my response to you. As the tests are inconclusive I can only assume that I had a really wicked virus that was swelling my glands (just as a healthy person would would experience) alongside my bulging artery. At this time I can find no other reason.

It could have been epstein barr virus but no way of knowing. A reactivated epstein barr is related to hypothyroid as well. I have mainly read of it causing hashimotos and neither my antibodies for thyroid autoimmunity or the untrasound indicate hashimotos. I just have to assume that at some point in the past, i had a horrid virus (EBV OR not) which got into my thyroid. I cannot find any other reason for the hypothyroid and POTS (not anaemic or b12 or vitD or adrenal etc).

Anyway, NDY seems to help all my symptoms when I have the correct dose and manage my lifestyle well.

Take care I pray for you too xx

Welcome to our forum Sybilb

There is no information on your Profile, i.e. when were you diagnosed with hypothyroidism, which dose of levothyroxine are you now taking? How long have you been on this dose.

When you have a blood test for thyroid hormones, make an appointment at the very earliest for a fasting blood test (you can drink water) and allow about 24 hours between your last dose of levo and the test and take it afterwards.

Have you had B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate tested as we are usually deficient.

Ask for a referral to an Endocrinologist re your swelling on your throat.

I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A NON- FUNCTIONING THYROID AT AGE 11 (1976) AND PUT ON 3MCG LEVOTHYROXINE , I TOOK THAT TILL IN MY LATE 30'S I WAS FEELING SICK AGAIN , LOSING HAIR , FOGGY THINKING , HEADACHES , ETC. , SO MY DOCTOR SWITCHED ME TO NAME BRAND SYNTHROID BECAUSE ITS LEVELS DONT FLUCUATE SO MUCH , IVE BEEN ON THAT FOR 10 YEARS AND WAS STABLE . I STARTED SEEING A NEW PCP AND SHE TOOK ME OFF OF MY MEDS SAYING SHE WANTED TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN , FOUR AND A HALF MONTHS LATER I WAS RUSHED TO HOSPITAL , I WAS SOOOO SICK I THOUGHT I HAD ALZHIMERS AND WAS DYING , THEY IMMEDIATLY PUT ME BACK ON MEDS ,FOR SOME REASON SHE HAS BEEN CONTINUOUSLY LOWERING MY DOSAGE (SHE SAYS ITS NOT NORMAL FOR MOST PEOPLE TO BE ON MORE THAN .5 MCG) IVE TOLD HER IM NOT MOST PEOPLE.... NOW SHE HAS LOWERED MY DOSAGE TO 112 EVEN THOUGH I KEEP GETTING SICKER , NOW I HAVE HUGE LYMPH GLANDS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF MY NECK , SCANS SAY 98 PERCENT LYMPHOMA !!!! I BELIEVE ITS BECAUSE OF HER MESSING WITH AND TAKING ME OFF MY MEDS ..... IS THERE A CONECTION BETWEEN HYPOTHYROIDISM MISTREATED AND LYMPHOMA ? IM REALLY SCARED , WHO DO I GO TO WHO WILL LISTEN TO ME AND TREAT ME ?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME !

I have just seen your response and you have had a horrible time. We rely on doctors but yours seems to be making your worse.

I would suggest you copy and paste the above as its always good to have a member's history into your Profile. (If you press on my name you will see how it works) Then post a new question (we always use small letters rather than caps as its easier to read)

Your doctor is making a serious mistake in lowering your dose of levothyroxine as we need an optimum dose to bring our TSH to 1 or below. From your past experiences with this doctor I would change to another. You cannot trust this doctor as she is concentrating on the blood test rather than your symptoms.

At the age of 11 you were given a small dose and I'm surprised it wasn't raised as you matured. Can you change your doctor as she doesn't know how best to treat someone with hypo.

As regards lymphoma etc I don't know the answer but I suggest you put up a new post saying your doctor has reduced your dose and the last time she stopped it altogether and you were rushed to hospital and they restarted levo but the doctor has now reduced it again and you are feeling very ill with the swelling etc.

Can you get a copy of your latest blood test results also (with the ranges) and post them together with the question as that will be very helpful.

You have my sympathy as we are at the mercy of doctors who appear not to have any training or know what can develop if we're on too low a dose.
