Deer thyroid

Hello -

A slightly odd Q, but does anyone know how I’d find the ratio of thyroid hormones in deer thyroid? I know bovine has more T4 compared to T3 than porcine, but wanted to find out more about deer thyroid.

helvella wondered if you might know how I’d find out? Hope you don’t mind the tag 🙏

Relentless don't get carried away by the other post on animal thyroid. Because of the dangers involved in consuming animal thyroid as a butchery item (rather than a manufactured pill NDT) it is illegal to sell animal thyroid in the UK.

If you plan to go out into the wild and get yourself a deer, then the same considerations apply as were pointed out in the other post - additional diseases in the tissue, the variability of thyroid hormones in a small portion and lack of consistency. Plus you don't want to risk getting Lyme disease from those nasty deer tics!

But since you ask here is a start. Note the thyroid weight is seasonal which may be a consideration:

karger.com/Article/Pdf/142815

and it would appear that concentrations of thyroid hormone depends on whether the deer are wild or captive:

cdnsciencepub.com/doi/abs/1...

and finally:

'Mean seasonal levels for six sex-age classes of deer ranged from 150 to 400 ng/dL (T3) and from 6.0 to 18.0 μg/dL (T4). Seasonal variation of T4 was less pronounced than that of T3.'

Thanks for your reply 😊 I have a lot of access to deer meat and eat the organs of it regularly, the man who hunts and butchers them has a certification that means he is able to assess the viability of the deer for disease etc. but consistency of the thyroid would worry me, as well as having no idea about the ratio of thyroid hormones in deer thyroid.

But I’m curious about what you’ve said about it being illegal to buy NDT from the UK, is that why my armour is so expensive??

No I said that is illegal to by butchered thyroid in the UK as opposed to NDT. It is not illegal to buy NDT - you just can't get it here as it is not licensed for use.

You will see I have edited my response to add the hormone levels for deer.

in reply toLalatoot

that’s so helpful, thank you 😊 I don’t know how you found that so fast! I looked for a while myself 😂 and I assume NDT is not licensed for use because we’ve now been told that T4 is good enough for everyone?

NDT isn’t licensed because it’s what’s known as a grandfathered drug

thyroiduk.org/if-you-are-hy...

Because natural desiccated thyroid has been around for so long it never needed to go through the licensing process in America – it was classed as a “grandfathered drug”. It has always been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) but not licensed in the same way that many other drugs have been.

in reply toSlowDragon

do we use the same FDA as america even tho we are the UK?

When thyroid treatment originally started NDT was the only option and I don’t imagine was ever “licensed”as such

thanks so much for this information SlowDragon , appreciate it! I really ought to know more about the history of the drug I am taking. I’m going to do some reading. If you know anymore links or resources about NDT I’d love to see them :)

Lives were saved from 1892 onwards when the first person was given NDTs (natural dessicated thyroid hormones) from animals and it was a popular prescription from thereon. It was withdrawn without notice in the UK.

As far as I know no thyroid blood tests were available in 1892 but the doctors knew all of the clinical symptoms and prescribed NDTs.

I've always been interested about the t4 to t3 ratio of lamb or goat so I can understand the curiosity. That said I'd be terrified to try it even if I had access for all the obvious reasons

in reply toImaaan

Yeah, I have a guy who has a certificate for finding diseases and these deer I have access to are wild so they’d surely be really susceptible to so many diseases I couldn’t even imagine 😩 but I wonder if it would help me if I did eat some deer thyroid now and again…

It's all the unknowns that come with it that's really worrisome. More importantly, it's not standardized so you have no clue how much hormones you'd be taking in from one bite to another. I know you're desperate to feel better but trust and believe it's not the way to go.

in reply toImaaan

yes I think you’re right x

I reckon that would be thyroid hormone Russian roulette 😱 As the others have said worthy of discussion just to discount it. 😊👍

Lalatoot has provided some good information.

You will find a number of papers by using this PubMed search.

Note that deer thyroid hormone levels are involved in both reproductive control and metabolic. Hence, they vary differently to human.

thank you 😊

Throwing my tuppence worth in I'd suggest you need to put this idea out to grass with the animals!

Thyroid treatment can be difficult enough without struggling with indeterminate hormone content and the preparation of possibly, an erratic supply of thyroid gland.

I wonder if it would help me if I did eat some deer thyroid now and again…

"Some"........" now and again"......That wouldn't constutute the steady and constant supply of hormone that we need for good health

in reply toDippyDame

😂 thank you! Yes I don’t think I’ve ever had quite such an unpopular idea before 😂 I wouldn’t stop my own medication in order to eat occasional deer thyroid but I take your point 😅👍🏼

It being an unpopular idea shouldn't put you (or anyone else) asking in future about all sorts of things.

Sometimes this sort of discussion really helps us to understand things better.

in reply tohelvella

thanks Helvella, that’s a good point and kind of you to say 😊

Not unpopular at all .....just maybe not advisable for your health

Nothing wrong with a bit of imagination...we'd still be in caves without it!!

in reply toDippyDame

yes, I guess it must have been the inspiration for NDT initially!
