Hashimoto's and CT scan with Iodine Containing Contrast Materials

I had a CT scan in August. No one warned me that this would involve an IV with an Iodine Containing Contrast solution. No one had any idea how this would affect me with regard to thyroid levels. In other words, I encountered the usual apathy with regard to being a thyroid patient and what my needs might be.

I think I did notice, in the weeks following, more fatigue than usual and weight gain, in spite of my best efforts.

Has anyone else on this forum had an experience with CT Scan with Iodine Containing Contrast solution?

Hi kferrer

I haven’t—but this is where the search function can be really useful. 🙂

Here’s what I found:

Yes, I had a CT scan with iodine several years ago and was unwell for a week or more afterwards. I ached all over, as though I had a virus of some kind. It started as I drove home. They had assured me in the hospital that I would have no reaction. Slowly I improved but I shall not allow it again, unless it is a dire emergency. I have no thyroid and according to the nurse, that was an advantage, as the fear is of damage to the thyroid by the contrast. Odd then that I reacted in such a profound way….

yes have had abdominal mri and ct scans both with contrast in the past. I dont recall any issues but it was a few years ago, and my problem then was with an adrenal tumour so was feeling pretty rubbish anyway.

my reaction was TSH went from 3.8 to 0.7 in one month after. I went hyper and stoped sleeping.

You could get your thyroid levels tested and if you have others compare them.

When I had an MRI (body not neck) they gave the consent form and info just before I went in, so I didnt realise I was being given a contrast dye, and bowel thing to keep everything still. Looked them up afterwards. MRI was fine but I had difficulty walking in straight line to get back into the hospital then back to waiting room. Nurse just shrugged and said no side effects. So dizzy and with headache/weird out of it feeling I had to take rest of day off and go to bed for afternoon. OK next day. Pre hypothyroidism diagnosis but hadn't had any TFT tests then.

Hi. I have Hashimotos. I've been taking levothyroxine, Almus brand, for many years. I've had abdominal MRI's with Gadolinium contrast and I felt below par for a couple of weeks after, with minor aches and pains. I've also recently had a CT colonography with Gastrografin contrast. I understand that both these contrast dyes contain iodine. With Gastrografin, I also had Buscopan just before the procedure, to relax the muscles. I felt fine afterwards, but dizzy on waking for a few weeks, gradually subsiding. Not sure whether this was caused by Gastrografin or Buscopan. I understand that if your thyroid function is controlled satisfactorily with levothyroxine, then iodine should be safely tolerated. Of course, anyone can have a reaction to a medication, regardless of thyroid involvement. I would mention that I do have several allergies to antibiotics and pain relief medication, skin allergies, etc. However, I would not hesitate to have these contrasts again if I need them to give a diagnosis.

Hi Kferrer, I have Hasimotos. I had a CT scan and was given dye by IV, and within 5 secs approx I gelt like U was going to pass out laying down in CT scanner bed.I sat up and said I don't feel good. So they stopped the dye.

Noone gave me any explanation as to why I reacted like I did?
