Swopped to HYPER after years of HYPO?!!

PolyannaYorkshire profile image

It looks as though I am now HYPERthyroid... I cannot understand it. My latest TSH levels 0.28 mU/L (0.35 - 5.00m U/L) and my T4... 24.2pmol/L (11.00 - 23.00pmol/L). Has anyone any thought on this. Ive been Hypo for years...my mum was and one of my daughters and my son are both hypo. I took 100mcg levo day one and 150mcg Day 2 (as 25mcgs were Teva not Accord so decided to keep to Accord and take their 50 every other day). Morning of blood test I did not take my levo at all.

GP has said to take 100mcg every day and will retest in 8 weeks.

if you don’t think the test has produced a result which seems to be sensible, ask for a repeat test either straight away or in 8 weeks time but without changing dose. They really aren’t that accurate sometimes.

was test done day after taking 150mcg dose or after 100mcg dose

Why not cut 50mcg in half to give 125mcg everyday

Rather than reducing to 100mcg everyday…..try 100mcg and 125mcg alternate days

When were vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 last tested

Just testing TSH and Ft4 is completely inadequate

Suggest you get FULL thyroid and vitamin testing done before changing dose

Most important result is Ft3

Optimal vitamin levels are essential for good conversion rate

You are hypothyroid. Your thyroid can't regenerate and suddenly start over producing thyroid hormone (which is hyperthyroidism). You can be overmedicated which would cause a high FT4 and low TSH.

When did you take your last dose of Levo before the test? We always suggest last dose is 24 hours before test, taking Levo before the test will give a false high result.

The most important test hasn't been done - FT3. T4 is a storage hormone and converts to T3 which is the active hormone that every cell in our bodies need. This is the resut that tells us if we are overmedicated - over range FT3 = overmedicated.

If you took your last dose of Levo 24 hours befor the test then don't accept a dose reduction unless FT3 is tested and shown to be over range.

Have you ever had thyroid antibodies tested? If so were they raised, confirming autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashismoto's)? This causes fluctuations in test results (and symptoms).

Also...very very tired and bad constipation...so Hyper??!!

These are hypo symptoms.

Have you had Vit D, B12, Folate and Ferritin tested? These need to be optimal for thyroid hormone to work properly and good conversion of T4 to T3. I wouldn't be suprised if your FT3 was low.

Antibodies were tested a few years ago and it said I was hypo...A year ago Sep.21 I got tested privately and T 3 was fine 5.19(3.1-6.8) Free T4.. 23.9 (12.0-22.0) & TSH 0.26 (0.27-4.20) yet both very similar to todays readings. Folate, Ferritin & B12( 634....200-900) all fine mid.range. I feel so lousy brain dead...constipated & very tired all day long...but sleep badly!!

Yes over 24 hrs and 100mcg then. Last test Jan.2022. All bloods done except D3!! But everthing in range...even Vit B12 as I was concerned I had PA (like my grandmother)

T3 was NOT tested.

Hello Polyanna

If hypothyroid - it is impossible to ' go hyper ' :

You could be over medicated but without a T3 reading and range this blood test just shows a slightly over range T4 and a slightly under range TSH and not sufficient information to dose and monitor on.

A further test should be run to include the T3 which is the most important result of all - and yes, of course the question is one of why isn't T3 routinely tested since this all takes up more time and money rerunning the full thyroid blood test that should have done in the first place.

Thank you. Had T3 done a year ago & it was OK... So difficult

year ago is too long

You need to retest thyroid and (ideally) vitamins too

Monitor My Health Is cheapest for just TSH, Ft4 and Ft3

Watch out for postal strikes

Only do private testing early Monday or Tuesday morning and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Are you still taking Daily vitamin D and B12

And daily vitamin B complex

Magnesium?

Selenium?

Stop vitamin B complex a week before test

During the week you stop this, instead take daily methyl folate (eg Jarrow)

Are you on strictly gluten free diet or dairy free diet

I jad stopped b complex '& b12 as B12 was over recorded. Will start again
