Agh…Whats going on with me?

Back in January I was taking 100mcg of T4 and 10mcg of T3 and tested the items below.

FT4- 1.31 (0.82-1.77)

FT3- 2.9 (2.0-4.4) (paid out of pocket for test and Doctor won’t look at this result)

T3- 104 (71-180)

TSH-0.526 (0.450-4.5)

8 weeks ago I was given a 25mcg per day increase in Levo …. 125mcg and 10mcg T3.

FT4- 1.44

FT3-2.7

T3- 123

TSH- 0.236

Lab ranges for both test are the same and the test time and no meds prior to test are also the same.

Why would my FT3 drop with levo increase instead of increasing? My doctor is resistant to increasing T3 and definitely won’t do it now that my TSH is also lower.

Were both tests done as recommended

Early morning, last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test and last 5mcg dose T3 approx 8-12 hours before test

You likely need extra 5mcg T3

Are your vitamins optimal

Yes, both test were done the same way.

I have no idea about vitamins since my GP won’t test them and it is super expensive to test those on my own. But Im certain my Vitamin D is low in range because my medical issues pretty much seal that and haven’t been able to tolerate the sun at all for the past year which has something to do with my PSA meds.

Well nether levothyroxine or T3 work well without optimal vitamin levels

Suggest you get tested

Unfortunately my household bills have doubled thanks to our awesome gov’t and I don’t have the luxury right now to plop down $400 dollars on a complete vitamin and iron panel in the hopes that this can answer my questions or solve my problems. Maybe I can convince my GP that having my vitamins and iron levels checked are important.. holding my breath!

All I can suggest Batty, is that the increase has made the body convert more T4 to RT3 because it didn't like the new level or the new spike level. You could try splitting your increased levo dose to see if a more even level overall helps.

Ok here is the thing I did increase the extra 25 mcg tablet slowly I did a 1/4 of the 25mcg tablet over the first couple of weeks and then increased it to the full 25mcg pill which I tried to split into 2 doses …. but I had a difficult time cutting those suckers even with a pill cutter. I have actually been on 125mcg levo for about 2 years with no issues… except my TSH fell and you know chicken little (endo) thinks the sky is going to fall and reduces it.

I am lucky that my endo had their say about the sky falling in; I disagreed; they agreed that I could keep my TSH suppressed at my own risk and it was never discussed again. There was a theory on a post ages ago that struck a chord - I will try to find the post - researchers were looking at how the spike of a daily dose taken in one go can cause the body to think it is overmedicated and subsequently to reduce ft3. However the same amount of daily levo taken as 2 separate doses did not have that effect because the gentler spikes didn't reach that trigger spike level. If that makes sense.

It did to me as I have always been a levo 2 or 3 dose daily. tolerated it better that way.

It might be that your body has changed and doesn't want so much in one go.

I also split my doses mostly to fend off exhaustion.

Very interesting - micro doses. Hadn’t read that one and will have to read several more times! Thanks Lalatoot.

Maybe its just a sign that your thyroid is failing further. Thank heavens you had the increase! As for the vit D if you cant tolerate the sun now and havent bedn in it for a year you need to tell your GP this. Once logged he should feel duty obliged to test your vit D. Tell him you dont want to get to the position that your bones start to break. (happened to me!). Look of Grassroots or Vitamin D council websites. Symptom of vit D deficiency are non restorative sleep (ie you sleep well but wake up feeling like you havent slept) aches and pains, fatigue.

I lost my thyroid to cancer 5 years ago …. Doctors don’t like testing vitamins for some reason and eventually I will have to do my own just cant do it now.
