Hi,

I am in Scotland and unable to access Oroxine. I need a months supply of an alternative. Can anyone suggest a good alternative? I have been taking 150mcg for nearly 10 years and I am well on it. Extended my holiday but dont have enough Oroxine :(

Many thanks

There is no alternative that is thyroid hormone replacement that you can buy.

Levothyroxine is a prescription only medication here in the UK so you can't buy it over the counter. You could go to the GP surgery where you are staying and explain your situation, maybe they can give you a prescription but I think it may have to be a private prescription, I doubt they can give you an NHS prescription as you are not a UK resident with a National Health Service number.

Thank you. Yes I obtained a prescription and explained I wanted a brand as close to Oroxine as possible. Unfortunately it was dependant on the pharmacy they sent the script to. I ended up asking for Eltroxin and hope for the best. Its only for about 3 weeks I need it before I return home to my regular medication. Appreciate the time you took to answer my query.

Oroxine is levothyroxine

Not all brands of levothyroxine suit everyone

My medicines document has all UK makes listed. As well as Oroxine.

Be careful, I think you get Eltroxin in Australia. But that is made by Aspen and is a different formulation to the UK product (made by Mercury Pharma) also called Eltroxin.

You will have to get a prescription from someone.

Is there any possibility of getting some sent over to you?

Oroxine is available, it appears, in Ireland (but not Northern Ireland). You'd still have the prescription issue but it is a lot closer than Australia!

Other than that, have a look through the ingredients of the UK products and Oroxine and see what appears most similar?

I don't know whether you get 150 microgram tablets but, if so, note you will need to make the dose up from 100 + 50 or whatever. In the UK we don't have any tablets higher dose than 100 micrograms.

I have created, and try to maintain, a document containing details of all thyroid hormone medicines in the UK and, in less detail, many others around the world.

Hope it works out for you. As you say, for four weeks you might be just fine.
