Short Synacthen Test - Update

As a follow up to my query on SST, I had the test yesterday, no problems, took around 50 mins. I didn’t feel any worse other than slightly shaky about an hour after, don’t know if that means anything.

Just wanted to say thank-you to everyone who chipped in with their stories and advice, much appreciated.

Thank you, I’ll post the results in the hope they might might be helpful to others. Bizarre coincidence/or not, I stopped all vits and ginseng around 10 days before test, and on the day of the test, I felt better than I have in almost 3 years. Go figure…

I also felt great after my SST, even though I was in floods of tears during it. I think being given ACTH must be a great relief if you don't usually make enough. I also felt wonderful after a general anaesthetic.

That’s interesting- do you think it’s because we’re not producing enough acth naturally?

I’m also high as a kite after a numbing shot at the dentist - that was years ago so this must have been going on a while.

I don't really know, but I have central hypo, which suggests a pituitary problem, and ACTH is produced by the pituitary

Hi Jamima,

Good luck with the results!

Did they do the ACTH one as well where it gets put on ice and goes straight to the lab?

I'm still waiting for my results so hopefully 'no news is good news' although I did have to do the ACTH a second time but have an endo appointment next week so I should find out then.

Take care.

Hi Hedgeree - I’m not sure what they did - they took 3 separate blood samples before the synacthen shot, so hopefully one of those was ACTH. Tbh, the nurse wasn’t very friendly and I’m just done with pushing for help. They should be testing all pituitary hormones, can’t imagine it’s that difficult once you have the blood sample. I’ve got an appointment with private endo on 16 April, so hopefully the results will be available then. I’ll post the results when I get them.

Not what you're looking for?
