Thyroid problems are not an illness which gets cured. Thyroid problems are a condition which you manage and live with with the help of lifelong management with the addition of hormones for hypothyroidism or with the use of carbimazole in the case of hyperthyroidism.Sometimes folks do experience periods of remission which can last for years but there is no cure for a damaged thyroid.

Welcome to the forum Lara3389,

It depends on the cause of the thyroid problem. If there is a diagnosis of hypothyroidism caused by iodine deficiency, then it may be possible to sort out the problem by taking iodine.

But if, for example, the thyroid problem has an autoimmune cause, then a 'cure' is less likely and the missing hormone usually needs to be replaced by taking hormone 'pills'.

Welcome to the forum

Hypothyroidism means, we need replacement thyroid hormones as your own thyroid is no longer functioning correctly. This almost always means lifelong replacement

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease also called Hashimoto’s diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Have you had thyroid antibodies tested?

Technically Autoimmune thyroid disease with a goitre is Hashimoto’s, and autoimmune thyroid disease where thyroid shrinks and shrivels up is Ord’s Thyroiditis

Both variations are usually referred to as Hashimoto’s

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking

When were thyroid levels last tested

Always test thyroid levels early morning, ideally before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Extremely important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once a year

When hypothyroid we frequently have low vitamin levels and improving low vitamin levels by supplementing can reduce symptoms

Welcome to the forum Lara3389.I knew very little about thyroid issues when I joined this forum and have received incredible support and information here.

Let us know a little bit more about your symptoms and what (if anything) you are taking and we will advise and help.

Very best wishes 🦋
