flaked and split fingernails

random I know but ..... has anyone else experienced fingernails that split and flake ? Mine are awful - so much so that I'm embarrassed to show my nails. I have recently had to change from Naturethroid to Erfa - since Jan 2022 and wondered if this was coincidence or not. When on NT I could wear nail varnish but now it's gloves!

p.s. I had a stash of NT and have gradually introduced Erfa - great advice from great people on here.

When did you last test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Hi SD , thanks for your replyI have to admit that as I have been so well since 2008 -I have not bothered too much with supplements and relied on my varied healthy diet (with Vit D and turmeric capsules to help maintain my energy etc.,) It is only since I have stopped taking Naturethroid that my nails have gone like this. I feel good with no changes to daily life, still dog walking etc., My last blood test was before lockdown - for obvious reasons I did not want to bother my GP or go to the hospital in order to have my blood taken. Now things have calmed down a bit and I've had all the covid vaccs and boosters and flu and pneumonia jabs done I shall contact the surgery to arrange to have a blood test in the near future.

This was my right hand mid 2018!

I'm beyond embarrassed by this

Right hand, so difficult to hide.

Tests showed no fungal infection

Medics couldn't help, it gradually spread to all nails

Left hand fine

A student medic once suggested " thyroid" and that was promptly dismissed.

He was correct!!

Small grandson calls them "Granny's funny nails"!

Currently -

Little finger nail is now 100%

Index finger nail 90%

Middle and ring finger nails much as photograph

Thumb 60%

It looks as if low cellular T3 over a long time may be the cause

I need high dose T3 to function.

How have your FT3 levels been?

Check nutrients as advised by SlowDragon

Wish I could help!

My GP had no idea. Thought it was fungal nail and referred me on to a Dermatologist consultant who diagnosed nail psoriasis.

Nail psoriasis can be a symptom of hypothyroidism.
