Hello I had a thyroidectomy in September and last week had an emergency Op to remove an ovarian cyst - anyone else had anything similar as I am sure there is a link?
Ovarian Cyst?: Hello I had a thyroidectomy in... - Thyroid UK
Ovarian Cyst?
I had a Sub-Total Thyroidectomy in 1978, and had both ovaries removed in 2016 due to benign cysts.
In my opinion its a hormonal connection between the two.
I had an emergency full hysterectomy due to a large growth (I presume cyst) on one of my ovaries in 2010. I had been under severe stress for about 2 years. I had signs of hypothyroidism but didn’t know it back then.My symptoms got progressively worse until I was formally diagnosed in 2016.
Are the 2 problems linked? I don’t know but I always thought the hysterectomy was a big trigger for the thyroid really slowing down 🤷♀️
Take care x
I have been on thyroxine for nearly 70 yrs for a under active thyroid had a full hysterectomy a few years back due to a ovarian cyst, but noticed no difference with regards to my thyroxine medication after the op.
Hi and happy holidays! Quite a few of you are saying you have had ovarian cysts removed. My GPs say there is no need and it's not standard practice but I'm not convinced. What triggered the surgery - was it size of the growth or pain or some other reason they were worried enough to recommend surgery?
I wouldn't be convinced of the safety of routinely leaving ovarian cysts in place either.
Someone I know had an ovarian cyst that was left in place for years. Her mother had died of ovarian cancer, so leaving this cyst sounded suicidal to me. The cyst was checked with an ultrasound scan once a year because of the family history. At some point when the person with the cyst was post-menopausal she had a bleed from her uterus. She was treated extremely well - very rapid biopsy, confirmation of endometrial cancer, hysterectomy and removal of everything etc.
It turned out that her cyst had been leaking - nobody knew for how long - and this was probably the cause of her cancer and inevitable hysterectomy.
If they had just removed her cyst when it had first been found years before she might never have needed a hysterectomy.
I had mine removed as they thought it might be cancer, but luckily it turned out not to be.
Can I ask what symptoms those of you with ovarian cysts had please?
My GP just said I had 'middle pain' but I'm unconvinced...
Thank you all - mine was found due to unbearable pains - was 7cm and was not there when scanned in September two weeks before the thyroidectomy- the pain was why they removed - have still not had results but am assuming no news is good news. Am convinced the hormones have caused it. Also have this feeling it will happen again. Feeling full of gas and bloated - swear my meds are wrong and causing this - I just want to feel well again.
