GP NEEDED AN NHS BLOODS TO BE DONE

DarkHorseJen profile image
21 Replies

HI all, sorry to bother you so near to Xmas and no need to respond straight away as I know how busy this time of year is. If one of you knowledgeable people would be able to have a look at my most recent blood tests when you have a moment and just let me know what they think before I speak to the doctor and then I will know what I need to ask for.

I think my problem is more to do with a lack of ferritin rather than thyroid now. Although I can see it heading to the higher end of the range. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Blood test was a fasting bloods, no tea or coffee either - taken at about 7.30am - I am not on any medications and I refrained from taking any self medication (ie I have not taken biotin for over a month now).

Many thanks for any information or advice offered

Oops I thought I had. Can you explain how you add two photos as I can only seem to get on of them to attach. Many thanks

Your B12 is low and before you supplement I'd get a blood test to exclude Pernicious Anaemia (I now have several autoimmune conditions). P.A. is another autoimmune condition and it is very important that we have to get regular B12 injections.

Members who know how to post photos will respond when they read your post.

Your ferritin is terrible. I had an iron transfusion privately and the consultant told me that less than 30 was deficiency and less than 15 was total depletion.

You literally have zero iron stores.

I'm not surprised you have symptoms!

A brief look at your previous posts suggests your thyroid was struggling a month ago. Do you have updated thyroid results?

Your ferritin is very low. You need to definitely work on supplementing that. You will be feeling lots of ill effects with that.

Ferritin below 30ug/L is considered by NICE to be iron deficiency.

Hematocrit below range, haemoglobin low in range, suggest possible anaemia.

Ask GP for an iron panel, your results suggest possible iron deficiency anaemia.

Hi susie. I did ask for an iron panel and this is the test he did. Are they not the right ones? Thanks x

SeasideSusie profile image
SeasideSusieRemembering in reply to DarkHorseJen

No, an iron panel consists of

Serum iron

Transferrin Saturation

Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC)

Ferritin

DarkHorseJen in reply to SeasideSusie

Ahh thanks susie. I did actually say to doc that I wanted a full iron panel. Obviously this has not been done - why, I don’t know now I have to get in touch with a gp again book another blood test - wait for the results etc I’m just worn out with it - why don’t they just do what u ask. I’m feeling exasperated- I have told them I have had some sortOf problem for over 20 years and obviously I wasn’t strong enough or educated enough to know that how I am feeling is not normal - I am over 50 now and just want to get my self sorted out once and for all. Why does nhs make it so difficult 😥!! Thanks for your help x

Clearly ferritin is dire

B12 and folate on low side too

Are you vegetarian or vegan?

Have you started supplementing vitamin D to improve low vitamin D to at least around 80nmol

Hi slow dragon- no I’m not a vegetarian or vegan and I eat quite healthily so I really don’t understand why I’m having such trouble with iron levels. And no I haven’t started supplementing with d3 yet as not sure what dosage to take. Many thanks for your advice x

Blue horizon test shows high TSH, very low Ft4

Low thyroid levels frequently results in low stomach acid. This can lead to poor nutrient absorption and low vitamin levels as direct result

Very low vitamin levels tend to lower TSH.

Low iron and/or low ferritin frequently linked to hair loss

cks.nice.org.uk/topics/anae...

In all people, a serum ferritin level of less than 30 micrograms/L confirms the diagnosis of iron deficiency

Look at increasing iron rich foods in diet

Eating iron rich foods like liver or liver pate once a week plus other red meat, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate, plus daily orange juice or other vitamin C rich drink can help improve iron absorption

This is interesting because I have noticed that many patients with Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism, start to feel worse when their ferritin drops below 80 and usually there is hair loss when it drops below 50.

Thyroid disease is as much about optimising vitamins as thyroid hormones

Low vitamin D

Test twice yearly via NHS private testing service when supplementing

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function. There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7. One spray = 1000iu

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

It’s trial and error what dose we need

Suggest you start with 1000iu daily

Thank you slow dragon. I’m finding this all a little confusing as I have hardly ever taken tablets. I used to go through flurries of taking vitamins or iron - omega 3’s or 6’s but have never actually been told to take anything by a dr apart from iron when I was pregnant so I just need to work out what I should be taking and when. Which I’m sure people like yourself will help me with on here. However, I will be intrigued as to what the gp thinks I need to do!!! Many thanks x

Come back with new post once you have spoken to GP

Ferritin that low, you almost certainly need iron supplements

SlowDragon profile image

It’s chicken and egg

Being hypothyroid frequently causes low vitamin levels

Very low vitamin levels reduces how well thyroid can work

If you look back at my reply to your previous post where you posted your full set of Blue Horizon results, you will see the dose of D3 that I suggested that you need to increase your current t level to reach the level recommended by the Vit D Society and Grassroots Health. I also gave you details of the important cofactors needed when taking D3 :

Thanks susie. I will go back and Re read your recommendations. I didn’t want to start dosing myself before I’d had this blood test with the nhs as I did not want to cloud any results which I’m sure you understand.

My ferritin level was 14 and I always eat lots of fruit and vegetables and foods with iron, and losing my hair. I have just recently been diagnosed with celiac disease and my Gastroenterologist told me that my iron levels should be halfway through the range, which is what we are also told on here by very kind and helpful people. He has also just put me on iron tablets twice a day now, as my GP wasn't giving me enough and wanted to stop it after 6 months. He also told me that I will probably be on iron for life now. Please be persistent with your Doctor as they just don't understand how unwell we are with low iron and trying to deal with our other autoimmune conditions. It was thanks to people on here that I was able to challenge my GP and to get my Gastroenterologist to put it in my letter not to stop my iron
