Hello everyone,

I've been on Levothyroxine since 2015, I started on 25mcg and gradually increased to 175mcg over the years, my symptoms have not improved in fact it has gone worse since being on levothyroxine. I am housebound due to fatigue, insomnia, and other health issues caused by the medicine and being hypothyroid. My doctor has said my blood results are normal, but I don't feel normal.

I am looking for a new GP in vauxhall, london, sw8 that prescribes armour thyroid I would be grateful for assistance as I am desperate and on the brink of giving up

HelloI don’t live in Vauxhall and did have to go private to get different treatment but just want to tell you not to give up!!

It’s worth it, the struggle, eventually.

Can you please post your blood results here?

Welcome to the forum

Before considering adding T3 or changing to NDT ….first step is ALWAYS to get full thyroid and vitamin testing

On any thyroid replacement hormones we must have optimal vitamin levels

Do you know if your hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease also called Hashimoto’s diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies?

Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription

Which brand?

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

If autoimmune thyroid disease, have you had coeliac blood test done?

Bloods should be retested 6-8 weeks after each dose change or brand change in levothyroxine

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested.

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis. Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

In U.K. medics never call it Hashimoto’s, just autoimmune thyroid disease (and they usually ignore the autoimmune aspect)

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

If TPO or TG thyroid antibodies are high this is usually due to Hashimoto’s (commonly known in UK as autoimmune thyroid disease). Ord’s is autoimmune without goitre.

About 90% of all primary hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto’s. Low vitamin levels are particularly common with Hashimoto’s.

Gluten intolerance is often a hidden issue too. Request coeliac blood test BEFORE considering trial on strictly gluten free diet

Please add most recent thyroid and vitamin results if you have them or come back with new post once you get results

It’s virtually impossible to get NDT (Armour or efra NHS) however it’s possible, but difficult, to get T3 prescribed on NHS

Email Thyroid UK for list of recommend thyroid specialist endocrinologists who will prescribe T3 or NDT

...NHS and Private

No GP can initiate T3 or Armour, it has to be via a thyroid specialist endocrinologist
