Levothyroxine & Sertraline.

Hi all.

Can these two tablets be taken together? I've always taken the thyroid tablets first and then the Anti Ds later (in the afternoon or evening) but I'm forgetting to take the sertraline a lot of the time.

Answer appreciated

You need to take levo 2 hours away from any other meds, vitamins to get max effect from it otherwise absorption can be compromised. You can take levo at bedtime.

Take as far away from each other as possible. Set an alarm,

Sertraline may reduce the amount of Levo absorbed so you may need to have an increase in your dose.

I take Levo in the morning and Sertraline at bed time 🤷‍♀️You could keep it by your bed or toothbrush 😬

Thank you everyone for your responses. Unfortunately taking sertraline at bedtime affects my sleep.

Will keep taking the Levothyroxine in the morning and the sertraline in the late afternoon.

Get a watch and set the alarm to remind you to take sertraline.

You may not realise that you can edit, or delete, any posts or responses you have made here.

HealthUnlocked have produced some help for how to do this. You can find this here:

support.healthunlocked.com/...

When you edit the original post in a thread, you will also have the option to add (or remove) a single image. (To replace an image, remove the existing image, then add the new one.) This is the same process as writing a new post:

support.healthunlocked.com/...

I am pointing this out purely to ensure that you know your options. :-)

(If you make extensive changes, it is sometimes helpful to add a comment so that people can see that you have made changes.)

Please do not feel the need to respond to this.

Hello Kinetic and welcome to the forum :

I was put on anti depressants, rather than be properly medicated for primary hypothyroidism.

I'm now off these drugs but having to self medicate my own thyroid hormones, as routinely the NHS do not run a full thyroid blood test nor prescribe anything other than than T4 - Levothyroxine.

Do you have any thyroid blood test results and ranges to share with forum members ?

How do you self medicate?

pennyannie profile image
pennyannie in reply to Tradoc

I buy my own thyroid hormone replacement and pay for my own blood tests and adjust my medication and supplements accordingly.

You need to know what you are doing and feel confident to go it alone as you will likely be challenged by your doctor in primary care.

I wouldn't suggest this to you yet as we don't know enough about your other health challenges and we are currently waiting on more information as to blood tests and ranges.

I've sent for the bloods. Is it hard to source the meds. I know you probably can't say on here if you want to pm me

There are people in Ireland who are getting help professionally :

Maybe start a new post asking for PMs of an endocrinologist / specialist in Ireland :

Thyroid UK the charity who support this forum hold a list of " supportive " specialists :

Scroll up this page and you will see their Logo - read further in their website and email for a copy of list of NHS/Private doctors who are supportive and understanding.

Depression is common hypothyroid symptom

Is your thyroid adequately treated

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking

Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription

You can take levothyroxine at bedtime, often more convenient and can be more effective

When were thyroid levels last tested

ALWAYS Test thyroid as early as possible in morning before eating or drinking anything other than water and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Essential to regularly retest vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least annually

Guidelines on dose levothyroxine by weight is approx 1.6mcg levothyroxine per kilo per day…..but some people need higher dose

Please add most recent thyroid and vitamin results and ranges
