That is not an Active B12 test, that is a Total B12 test. Active B12 measures the amount of B12 that is free/active/unbound and available for the cells to use. Total B12 measures the total amount of bound and unbound/free/active B12 and doesn't differentiate. You can have a high Total B12 but low Active B12. Some say that the Active B12 is the better test but this isn't normally done by the NHS.
My understanding is that a B12 test requires no special preparation so it can be done any time of day with no fasting necessary.
When my Total B12 was over 1000 my GP was concerned until I told him I take a B Complex containing some B12. Discuss with your GP as he might want to investigate further to eliminate any possible problem that high B12 might indicate.
Hi I am aware that >2000 is total this is nhs blood test result. I know they don't do active b12, i would use private b/test.Nhs. Aug. 2020 b12 level 1532 Sept 2021 now its > 2000
The gp's kept telling me it fine /OK, which quite possibly is ? , as I have print outs of my blood results, on the last result, the lab's commented make appt. with gp, which I did & again told the B12 is fine anything wrong, until I mentioned what the lab's had commented, then a decision was made to have FBC & Liver b/tests done, as I mentioned they are OK, the lab's again added B12 high.
OK. I misunderstood about your test when you asked if active B12 could be done anytime, as you were giving results for a B12 test I assumed you were saying these were the results of an active B12 test.
I wonder if the active test you speak of is similar to the methylmalonic acid test I use for B12 status? If it is high your b12 is low, and vice versa.
My B12 level as been rising its now >2000 dr's say it fine /OK, lab's. commented I needed dr's appt, Dr still said it was ok, until I point out the lab's comment, so I had fbc & Liver b/tests done results normal but stated high b12 again. Dr's at present are difficult to speak to. So goggling I found out about active b12 the NHS don't do them only do total. I know nothing about b12 high so when I have the results I will do a post. People here are lovely & knowledgeable someone would point in the right direction.Lab range (200-900)
