I’m currently on NDT under the NHS but have told I will need to go back on levo if I want to start a family. I’m really unwell when on Levo so looking at options for staying on NDT and have seen online some people have been able to take privately whilst pregnant. Does anyone know the costs involved with this?
Thanks, x

It is such a pity that those we'd expect to know more than us, hypo patients, do not as they've all lost the skills our 'old-fashioned' doctors were trained in when there were no blood tests at all and we were diagnosed upon our clinical symptoms alone and given NDTs. Natural Dessicated Thyroid Hormones, - made from animals' thyroid glands - more conducive to our human bodies than levothyroxine which is T4 only.
Many people do find they recover on levothyroxine and they will not be searching the internet for help/advice. Others who do not should be prescribed either T4/T3 or T3 alone. The NDTs have been withdrawn by the 'supposed to be experts' even though its safety has been proven since 1892 when it was first introduced. Before that we just died prematurely.
That largely depends on the private consultants fees, and whether the consultant & your GP can agree if bloods and other tests can be carried out on the NHS. This is especially worth pushing for if your GP is co- operative. Cost of private prescription & meds remains much the same no matter which private consultant you use as you can chose where to have meds dispensed.
An initial consultation fee can be as much as £250.00, although many offer a reduced rate if you are self-funding. If you are paying for bloods the tests vary in price but TFT’s are usually about £50, plus additional consultation fees for results to be discussed, the cost of the agreed prescription and then the meds. Telephone consultations are usually cheaper than a face-to-face and I assume as you are ttc the endo will want to monitor you closely as dose will need increasing quickly after conception.
I pay £100 per consultation - a few a year - and my six months supply of NDT works out at about £20 per month. Its changed my life so I CAN afford it!! x
Thanks for that info, v useful, I have Has his and allergies, controlled with diet and LDN. I am so tired and weak still, thinking I need T3 as well as T4. Do any of you know of any good private Endos in Merseyside area, or telephone appointment Endo that does T3 prescriptions ?? Thanks in advance, sorry to butt in on your thread, HashiFedUp. x
Is EFTA Thyroid NDT only available by prescription? I was taking a desiccated thyroid supplement from Nutri advanced which along with ultragenstan was the only thing that had lowered my levothyroxine needs. This is no longer available from this brand - they can't import the quality desiccated thyroid anymore. Has anyone had good experience with any over the counter ones?
You will find that and many more questions answered by my document:

I have created, and try to maintain, a document containing details of all thyroid hormone medicines in the UK and, in less detail, many others around the world.

You will get considerable relevant information by checking out "The Invisible Hypothyroidism". Rachel has documented her journey both with NDT and pregnancy, as well as many other issues she has had managing her hypothyroidism. She also founded the FB group "Thyroid Family: Hypothyroidism Advice and Support Group", which has experienced admins and many useful links. Hope you find the info you need.
I am not sure why they said you could not be on NDT to start a family - of course you can! I suspect it is because it is because the NHS would not know how to treat you and not understand the level change in your blood.
Why on earth would they want to give you something that would make you ill, and probably make your leves so that you would not conceive, as many women on Levo alone find it difficult.
For over a hundred years, women took NDT and had families with healthy children. We seem to be going backwards with womens health.
