Possible thyroid problem.

Hi there, I recently had a full thyroid test done through Thriva, I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the results?

I have a few hypo symptoms, fatigue, brain fog, low libido and anxiety. I'm also going through perimenopause at the moment and recently started HRT, I also found out that my calorie intake is way to low as nder 1200 calories per day for probably 12mths+, found this out because I started to log my food through the cronometer app.

My questions are, could my thyroid be out because of newly starting on HRT? I also read that low calorific diets can cause poor conversion?

I'm currently on no medication at all and my vitamin levels are all optimal, apart from my ferritin levels which go up and down due to heavy periods!

Thank you in advance for your time,

Melanie

If each image is just a single result, as it is for your first image, it might be much easier for anyone to read if you type the results out!

Trouble is Thriva doesn't give exact result ranges, you only see your result.

Thriva results are confusing and they seem to make it very difficult to find the full results with ranges report. However, all you need to do is log into your account and go to their Help page:

intercom.help/thrivahelpcen...

You will find the report in pdf form which shows the full list of tests, results and reference ranges and will look like this:

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

You can then download that picture here but please ensure you don't show your personal details (name, date of birth) and that you zoom into the test name/result/ranges rather than include a lot of blank space which makes it difficult to read as the results would end up quite small.

A normal, healthy person would have a TSH of no more than 2, often around 1, with FT4 around mid-range-ish. See graph here:

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

So you can see that your TSH is a lot higher than most healthy people, and in some countries once TSH goes over 3 you would be diagnosed hypothyroid. So your thyroid would appear to be struggling.

Your FT4 is just 33% through it's range so again this is low.

However, as none of us are ever tested for a baseline in health we don't know what is normal for us, but I do think your results point towards a struggling thyroid.

Your antibodies are within range so classed as negative for autoimmune thyroid disease; however, your TPO antibodies are close to the top of the range so a bit suspect. Antibodies fluctuate and you could find that another test might find them quite different from this test.

I think it would be worth repeating the full thyroid panel maybe in 3 months time. If TSH goes over range and TPO antibodies are also over range then that would suggest autoimmune thyroid disease (known to patients as Hashimoto's) and an enlightened doctor should precribe Levothyroxine.

As for your nutrient levels, do you supplement with anything?

Your Active B12 is higher than they measure which suggests you might be either taking a B12 supplement or injections.

Your Folate is at a good level and again I wonder if you are taking a B Complex?

Your Vit D is good.

Ferritin is low at 56 (13-150) and some experts say that the optimal level for thyroid function is 90-110ug/L.

You can help raise your level by eating liver regularly, maximum 200g per week due to it's high Vit A content, also liver pate, black pudding, and including lots of iron rich foods in your diet

Don't consider taking an iron supplement unless you do an iron panel, if you already have a decent level of serum iron and a good saturation percentage then taking iron tablets can push your iron level even higher, too much iron is as bad as too little.

Thank you so much for your very detailed reply.

I am supplementing with Jarrows B12 which also contains methlyfolate and B6. I will retest again in 3 mths to see where my levels are at then.

I did have a thyroid test done last August through Medichecks but only TSH and T4 tested.

Personally I would stop that supplement. You don't need the 1000mcg B12 that it contains.

It would be better to take a B Complex which has all the B vitamins and will keep them in balance and concentrate on raising ferritin level.

My choice for B Complex is Thorne Basic B.

Your August thyroid results are no better than your new ones really. Did you do both tests as we advise:

* Test no later than 9am to get highest possible TSH

* Nothing to eat or drink except water before test so that nothing affects TSH level

Yes I tested both on an empty stomach before 8.30am. Thank you, I will let ok into getting the Thorne B supplement and try even harder to up my ferritin levels, it's a bit like a yo-yo I'm afraid 😔
