I just got my ultrasound checked

US & EU use Similar Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System. UK also has a grading protocol classification U1-5.

They look at the features of nodules such as size, shape, calcification how solid/fluid the nodule is as well as the vascularity within and surrounding the nodule and judge if they think it requires further investigation.

I think a lot depends on the skill & experience of the scan operator. They will always be cautious and arrange a FNA (fine needle aspiration) If uncertain, but often a more experienced examiner with greater confidence might not proceed.

I think the size and calcification has raised a flag which suggests a FNA should be undertaken, has this been arranged yet?

Its straightforward quick procedure, by guided ultrasound. I was given a local & discomfort minimal. Some confident doctors complete quickly without local. Ask beforehand what they plan to do. Odd part was when I was told gently bite end of tongue this minimise swallowing & movement. Worked a busy shift after procedure. It wasn’t scheduled, I was only expecting a scan, I think the worry about having it done might have been worse.

19 per of 20 samples are benign.
