I’m furious with our GP practice

We started our little art class yesterday, after an 18 month break due to covid. One of the ladies and I walked up together and she mentioned that she wasn’t very well and that she had an under active thyroid. Long story short.... she has had the condition for many years and just had her Levothyroxine reduced due to ‘low something or other’, her words, to 75 micrograms. She is almost bald, you can see her whole scalp and this is what’s making me so cross. Firstly, she is completely clueless and secondly, that the doctors haven’t noticed and known the reason for her baldness and are obviously not doing a good job of treating her. I didn’t say anything to her about her hair, but could cry for her.

At my art class there are 4 others on levothyroxine

One was taking his levothyroxine with statins and PPI and often didn’t take levothyroxine 2-3 days a week. Now taking correctly and got off ppi and statins

Another had had her levothyroxine systematically reduced from 175mcg to 75mcg. She was extremely unwell and kept collapsing. She got full private thyroid and vitamin testing, unsurprisingly rock bottom vitamins and Ft3. Now supplementing, strictly gluten free diet and dose levothyroxine increased….after she insisted to GP

Another was always testing after lunch having taken daily tablets. Now tests as recommended and got two increases in levothyroxine as result. And supplements to improve low vitamin levels. No longer needs sticks to walk with

Another tested vitamins, discovered she was vitamin deficient. Symptoms improving now supplementing

Similar stories at every group activity I go to…..it’s an utterly appalling scandal

Unbelievable, but what can be done to improve the situation? Surely there must be something: a petition calling for more GP training? Just something!
