Kidney issues again due to absorption problems? Can I add another 5 mcg?

Due to anxiety and other hyper symptoms 7 weeks ago I reduced my levo from 75 mcg to 66,5 and upped my t3 from 10 to 15. I have been on this dose before and felt good.

Tsh 1

T4 14 ( 12-22)

T3 4,2

After this change I stayed at our Italian relatives house in Italy for 3 weeks. I also started taking levo and half t3 when going to bed instead of taking it in the morning. The other half t3 in the morning.

Now 3 weeks after coming home I feel like there is something wrong. My period came at day 23 instead of my normal 30 days and worst of all I have foamy urine ( proteinuria) like I had before adding t3. I’m so scared of having kidney issues again 😢. After adding t3 my Gfr went back to normal.

My questions are:

1. Could it be that I didn’t absorbed my levo and t3 well because of eating late and a lot in the evening ( I still waited 4 hours)? And /or because of the milk in the latte in the morning?

2. Can I safely add another 5 mcg ?

Getting full thyroid and vitamin testing done 6-8 weeks after any change in dose or brand levothyroxine/T3

Changing how/when you take levothyroxine/T3 might affect results

Always test as early as possible in morning before eating or drinking anything other than water and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Last 1/3rd of daily dose T3 approx 8-12 hours before test

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking?

Are you on strictly gluten free diet?

Italians obviously eat lot pasta …..if not gluten free, high gluten rich diet could be upsetting levels

Thank you for your response! No, I’m not gluten free. It hasn’t been an issue before but like you said, they do eat a lot of pasta and bread in Italy. Maybe it was a little to much for me. I’m also not used to eat that late and that much.

I’m will do a test on Monday but I just wanted to do something NOW. I’ll wait and write my new numbers on here Monday.

Just for curiosity, I remember you used to write “ take last half of t3 8-12 hours before test. Now you wrote last third?

I take magnesium, b-complex, fish oil, vitamin d and k, probiotics.

As you have Graves’ disease many find strictly gluten free diet helps or is essential

Before considering trial on gluten free diet get coeliac blood test done FIRST just to rule it out

lloydspharmacy.com/products...

If you test positive for coeliac, will need to remain on gluten rich diet until endoscopy (officially 6 weeks wait)

If result is negative can consider trialing strictly gluten free diet for 3-6 months.

If no obvious improvement, reintroduce gluten see if symptoms get worse.

Actually I’m just about to start reducing my gluten intake. I seem to have some problems with my female hormones and follow dr Aviva Romms advice on cutting out gluten. Interesting to see if that helps my thyroid problems as well.

Another question: how long time do you leave between last meal and your dose of t4/T3?

3 hours for me.

3 hours typically for levothyroxine

If eating late, taking levothyroxine during night instead of bedtime

T3 it’s not so critical

I think milk and yogurt really affects me and it’s such a shame because I love it. Am warming to oat milk with no added calcium… Your numbers weren’t high in range before… I’d be thinking of an increase in T3 if available to you.

I think the milk is a problem for me too 😢. I remember years ago while on just levo my levels were going downhill when I started to eat yogurt for breakfast. I love having some cheese for breakfast but I only dare to eat one slice. In Italy I had both caffe latte and also ricotta some mornings. These weeks in Italy were so so nice and I felt almost normal, eating almost what I wanted. Living la dolce vita. But now I have to pay for it😥. The quality of life with this disease is really not the same as before…
