Hi, my son is disabled & is on medication for Epilepsy. Just lately his LFT has been abnormal & also his thyroid & Vit D. The thyroid has been tested twice in the last 3 wks by the GP. My son is NOT on medication at the moment for thyroid. I have given levels below if someone would be kind enough to advise?

11th June 21

TSH 5.72 (0.56-4.53)

T4 13.0 (10.7-18.7)

5th July 21

TSH 10.68 (0.56-4.53)

T4 13.5 (10.7-18.7)

Vit D - 59.4nmol

Your son is hypothyroid and due to his last blood test showing 10.68, the GP should have prescribed levothyroxine and the starting dose is 25mcg..

Levothyroxine is also called T4 and your son should have a blood test every six weeks until TSH is 1 or lower and Free T4 and Free T3 should be in the upper ranges. It is a fasting test (he can drink water) and allow a gap of 24 hours between dose of levothyroxine and the test and take afterwards. Also the appointment has to be at the very earliest, fasting (he can drink water) and don't take levothyroxine until after the blood test.

Ask GP to test, B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate at the same time.

Always get a print-out of the blood tests, with the ranges, for your own records and post if you have a query.

Yes I'm also hypo but my son was born from IVF treatment with donor eggs so is not genetically related to me. Wonder if it can be passed through blood to baby!! Anyway he's 17 now & never had a test before. I'm more inclined to think it's due to the drugs he takes for Epilepsy etc. Unfortunately as my son is severely disabled he cannot describe symptoms but he is definitely falling asleep a lot. I know that feeling well 🙄 xx

Current recommendations are to verbally screen all women at the initial prenatal visit for any history of thyroid dysfunction or thyroid hormone medication. Laboratory screening of thyroid functions and/or thyroid antibodies should be considered for women at high risk of hypothyroidism.

Detection and treatment of maternal hypothyroidism early in pregnancy may prevent the harmful effects of maternal hypothyroidism on the fetus. For women on thyroid hormone prior to conception, thyroid function testing should be performed regularly throughout pregnancy as it is very likely that the thyroid hormone dose will need to be increased. Women are encouraged to ask their primary care providers for further information and clarification on this important topic.

Hi Monimouse1,I teach in a SEN school & know Epilepsy medication can make people very sleepy…. When did your son last have a review of his epilepsy medication? He definitely needs to start treatment for his thyroid ASAP , which will hopefully help alleviate his tiredness. Has your GP offered Levothyroxine yet? As shaws suggests, I’d push for this and get other key vitamins tested too. Do keep posting to let us know how you both get on.
