Hi, I’ve just had my regular eye test and paid for the scan of both eyes. A small amount of liquid was found in the macular at the back of my left eye. Is this caused by Hashimotos does anyone know? I’ve also got Sjögren’s syndrome. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Eye problems - macular oedema
Hi Janspenc,I’ve never heard of macular problems being caused by thyroid problems.
I have thyroid eye disease which is related, but I also have an epiretinal membrane, which my ophthalmologist says is totally unrelated. I take lutein & zeazanthin for overall eye health (eye complex 7 from Amazon) and Selenium for TED/ Thyroid health. I use preservative free eye drops like HycoSan or Hyloforte.
I hope your optician refers you to a specialist ophthalmologist who can offer more help. Best wishes to you.
My husband has Hoshimotos with high antibodies...have tried for years to get them down...and he has a lot of issues with macular problems in both eyes. He has been seeing a retina specialist for 6 years now
Thank you I wonder if it’s the inflammation caused by the immune system
My husband's retina specialist says they really have no idea what causes these issues, but I have my suspicions. My husband was on levothyroxine only, for years and never had good thyroid numbers and the antibodies kept rising. He finally changed Drs and the new dr. changed him to NDT. He has been doing better. Besides the retina issues, his kidney and liver functions declined on Levo. Even his new Dr. throws up his hands saying he doesn't know if the high thyroid antibodies have something to do with all of these issues. The more I research this, I truly believe this auto immune disease is the culprit.
My dear mum suffered with overactive thyroid then underactive for many years, as do a lot of her family including me. It’s very stressful to realise that there’s not really been any progress in the treatment or understanding of this damn disease
