I do have lower back pain and at times feel like I’m mainlining painkillers. But I’m not sure if it’s related to my hypothyroidism. There’s probably a connection but back pain is so common it’s hard to know for sure.

Yes, it goes away when my hypothyrodism is fully treated. I suspect it is a muscle tightening up as the pain goes away when I rest for a moment and is OK when I play badminton but then comes on overnight. Something to do with reduced metabolism in the back muscles?

It's very easy to have a scan and find some minor abnormality and nearly everyone has minor spinal abnormalities when they get older. So, avoid the temptation to over investigate or at least try and see if various exercises help.

Thanks, I'll look into some back exercises first!

... and make sure your thyroid is adequately treated. Both together.

I had constant lower back pain until my dose was much better. It still goes now and again. The physio gave me some strengthening exercises and said not to use the treadmill or run for any longer than 10-20 min bursts as it will aggravate it. So whilst it’s still in the background it’s a heck of a lot better just by taking thyroid medication. My neck pain cleared up when I went on thyroid medication also. X

Can I ask what thyroid meds your taking?

Cat013 profile image
Cat013 in reply toNessynu

I’m taking a combination of t3 and levothyroxine x

Yep! In fact joint and muscle pain is global really. With the autoimmune attack, with hashimoto’s, the immune system attacks your tendons / muscles etc causing inflammation, trigger points, tightness and pain. I’m on Celebrex and its changed my life for the better!

I've never heard of Celebrex is it an anti-Inflamatory?

Hello @nessynu I find that joints and muscles ache when there is a flare up of hashis, or not on the right dose. Some good yoga stretches for back pain work ( there are some good guides ones on YouTube) and I also use natural pain relief cream and gel that are made by Dermactiva and work fast. Good luck x

Thank you. I will check out the natural pain reliefs.

Also good to get tour bloods checked to make sure your levels are optimal. It’s such an ongoing maintenance balance! Sending you best wishes x

It certainly is ! I'm on t3 only medication so my numbers are always "off"

I haven't been lifting anything heavy so I was unsure if it was low thyroid hormones.

You may have lifted something heavy or twisted awkwardly 20 years’ ago and it is coming out now. Anyway, good luck.

I’m in terrible pain at the moment and have a scan next month, also awful elbow pain and numbness down my legs. I know I’m under medicated at the moment so I’m sure from reading the replies from your post that isn’t helping me. I hope you get your pain sorted and I wish you well x

I’ve had lower back pain for 30 years but was only diagnosed hypothyroid a year ago. So at first I thought they wouldn’t be connected. But then I wondered why the aches had never gone away in 30 years! No improvement so far with Levo, but maybe if I find an optimal dose all will be well!

Fingers crossed that you find your optimum thyroid meds/ dose. That's a long time living with pain!

I discovered my back pain/weakness was due to severe low Vit D - low Vit D is very common with underactive thyroid. So might be worth checking your Vit D level.

I will have my levels tested. Thank you

I have continual pain through my lower back and upper spine. I do feel my muscles have weakened after my hypothyroid diagnosis

I notice your post is six months old. How did you get on with your treatment?

For the last year I’ve had bad pain when I wake up in the morning, lower back stiffness, and needing to roll on my side and then very carefully standing up. Feeling 45 years going on 85 years! It mainly goes away when I get moving and doing things. I’ve been prescribed levothyroxine 50mg after seeing private consultant for long list of other ailments. (NHS said they wouldn’t treat me yet!)

I woke up after the first day of taking new meds, and voila. It was like a miracle. No back pain, no stiffness and no need to roll out of bed. I could hardly believe it.

I didn’t even realise that the two things were related until I started reading about other people’s experiences and googling it! I think it will take longer to treat other ailments, but so far this has been an unexpected transformation 🤓

I am extremely grateful to have the resources for the private support, it is well worth the investment to get the right treatment. 🙏

Yes I think getting the right thyroid medication and the right dose makes a hugh difference. Once I take my thyroid medication that lower back pain goes away until I'm due my next dose as I split my doses 3 times a day. Delighted your on the mend. Im not sure what other health issues your experiencing but I would suggest researching if their related ti your thyroid as it causes all sorts of other issues that you may not associate with it.

Okay, that’s good that you’re able to track it. Yes, thank you for the guidance. I’ve ordered some books today on thyroid and hormones. It’s a relief to find the real causes of so many symptoms!

Take care. Lx
