Thinning crepey skin - since subtle changes

So I’ve noticed my skin on my arms and thighs especially is suddenly looking old, dehydrated, crepey and old suddenly (I am 60 this year) but this is suddenly much worse and I don’t like it!

All I’ve done different in the last 6 weeks is increase Levo by 12.5mcg (fist increase ever), added one 1000iu spray of Vit D + K and added calm magnesium before bedtime!!

Any ideas anyone?

Magnesium flakes in the bath can help soften and improve skin

As I now have a bath seat I will definitely try this. Thank you

Sure will if I find anything xx

It’s the getting out the bath that’s often even trickier!

I purchased a bath chair lift. I must have got mine on special offer because I didn't pay this much but if you can find it cheaper it is well worth the money. Nothing to do, just sit it into the bath. It is nice to be able to have a bath again and you can even let the back go down a little for a bit of a relaxing soak. (For anyone thinking it wouldn't hold their weight I am a 'goodly weight' and it holds me and I feel very safe)

Here's a link to show you what I have

I'm 65 and the skin on my arms looks so thin, it would tear if I scratched it. The backs of my hands are all veiny and gnarled.I think it's just natural ageing. I moisturise well.

There are worse things to stress over (like my half bald head and drawn on eyebrows.)

😡😥Ageing sucks but it's better than not ageing at all.

And if you tell it to a Doctor they all say it’s menopause 🤨

Have you tried vitamin D mouth spray by Better You

There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7 (one spray = 1000iu)

amazon.co.uk/BetterYou-Dlux...

Absorbed in the mouth, so avoids gut issues

If vitamin D is still not tolerated, look at supplementing magnesium for few weeks before retrying vitamin D

Web links about taking important cofactors - magnesium and Vit K2-MK7

Magnesium best taken in the afternoon or evening, but must be four hours away from levothyroxine

Your welcome - yes of course you must let your system settle down first before trying again. You could check ingredients of the vit D drips your GP prescribed, might be way it’s delivered that upsets you. The Biocare Bio-D is worth consideration though - and the Biocare team are worth chatting too for advice. Sending my best 😊

Hi again I will check the only other way would be spray or injection but my doctor his opinion is that once its in the body and you encounterside effects nothing can be done.Thankou regards viv.

Add me to the list. I think optimising thyroid would help. I’ve read that the body directs the resources available to our essential organs rather than things like skin, hair and nails. Sensible but not good for our looks. Probably taking time to moisturise really well and often would help too!

Levo50 profile image
Levo50 in reply to HighlandMo

This is what I was looking for tbh ... and in my head it makes logical sense as in optimising the thyroid hormones and then my skin will rejuvenate!

Yes once the weather improves I tend to improve my skin brushing / moisturising routine too 🤗

I think it's the menopause, I was starting to get a bit like that when I deliberately took down my dose, when thinking of stopping it. I went back on it and all ok. So I think it's lack of female hormones. Good luck 😎

Levo50 profile image
Levo50 in reply to Marymary7

Well I’m past the menopause, and I did notice these symptoms but recently they seem to have gotten worse, so not sure whether it’s related to my recent minor tweaks

Also have very low libido, my 1st endo apt offered me testosterone! So I rejected as I’m not that desperate (lol), however if it’s going to rejuvenate my skin then maybe 🤔

Marymary7 profile image
Marymary7 in reply to Levo50

I'm still taking HRT at 66 menopause at 48. I would go for it if still allowed, it protects your bones. I'd also take the testosterone if I could that helps strengthen your muscles I believe then the skin tone perhaps?

Levo50 profile image
Levo50 in reply to Marymary7

Thank you for your reply - I’m personally quite nervous of taking HRT as my mother developed pre cancerous cells and had a partial mastectomy which was after being on HRT, she always made the connection so although maybe not valid it has stuck with me 20 years on. I do weight training for my bones and I may just grab that testosterone, I’d like to give my body time to adjust whilst titrating Levo so I kind of know where I’m at naturally first it that makes sense! I’m going to up my Vit D the doc just called and said this has dropped so this may help 😀

Yep 60 here and I now have thin crepey skin inside top of arm (bingo wings) and front of thighs, so no more sleeveless tops for me. Everyone says fasting improves skin but there's no way I can go 7 days a month without eating for autophagy, I will just wear sleeves :)

Painwork profile image
Painwork in reply to endomad

I am on the 5:2 diet which is quite good so u only fast for 2 days out of 7 sticking to 500 cals for the 2 days. Eat normally rest of the week. I've lost half a stone slowly but surely since jan 14th I think the fasting idea has merit health wise.

Bearo profile image
Bearo in reply to Painwork

I was thinking of doing the 5:2 diet, but Michael Mosley expressly says not to if you have thyroid problems. Maybe if your T3 is high enough to cope with the calorie deficit it’s ok?

Painwork profile image
Painwork in reply to Bearo

After years of overactive thyroid, graves disease, radiation therapy, steroids, corrective eye surgery (still left with double vision issues ) . I was advised to have radioactive iodine but refused as had a small baby at the time. So I carried on with carbimazole until menopause when suddenly all tests read normal so no medication, after menopause tested under active within range so on lowest dose of levo . Everyone is unique and for me it is working I am losing weight which is really helping with mobility issues so each to his or her own I suppose x

Levo50 profile image
Levo50 in reply to Bearo

Did he ... that’s interesting! I was hoping the addition of T3 may be the answer, however, not sure that’s the best route being both expensive and difficult to source, but oh how amazing it would be to experience life as my 16 year old self again stress and care free - wow what a thought!

Stourie profile image
Stourie in reply to Bearo

Hi Bearo, a few years ago I did the Atkins diet and lost a stone in 6 weeks and felt good. Maybe lack of calories affects some people but it didn’t me. Need to do it again though. 😊 Jo xx

Pesonally I really don’t get how fasting can improve skin 🤷‍♀️

endomad profile image
endomad in reply to Levo50

Apparently the body eats up old cells including lose skin (autophagy) I just can't do regular 24-48 hour fasts to test the theory 😊

Levo50 profile image
Levo50 in reply to endomad

Oh really! But 24-48 hours without food is harsh not sure I could do that either!

I use the ordinary hylauronic acid on my face and rib it in the back of my hands which has made a difference I think also making a special effort to drink water and not eat so much crap hahaha I am 66 next week and at some point you just have to say age is a bitch and work with what u got x

Levo50 profile image

Makes sense! Could.you recommend any hyaluronic ?

Agree cutting crap helps but tough during lockdown!!

The Ordinary make hyaluronic acid that's so cheap you can spread it everywhere.

Hello, if you're female and being 60, are you post menopausal? I would see that as a drop in estrogen...are you on any form if HRT?

What about adding a Collagen supplement?

Levo50 profile image

Appreciate the recommendation but I’ve tried this in the past and didn’t notice any improvement - maybe I didn’t give it long enough, is there any brand that can recommend? X

I'm 60 too this year and just the same. Thin hair, no eyebrows, ridges on nails and the "creepy" skin lol. Not like it but hey ho we are still breathing. Hope summer fixes it and you feel better about you. x

I am in America, so I order off of Amazon, but any Collagen that is between2-6 gms a day would be sufficient. It usually takes about 12 weeks to notice any changes. It helps with thyroid function also. Might be worth revisiting?

PurpleButterfly7 profile image
PurpleButterfly7 in reply to Dottie44

I was going to suggest collagen as well. Use it for about a month before deciding if it helps. I currently take Vital Proteins, but I really noticed a difference with AlaniNu brand. Just make sure whatever you use also contains hyaluronic acid. I am 48, but am trying to keep my skin as long as I can. I follow Hot & Flashy on youtube and she has a ton of skin suggestions.

Bio-active methyl folate. Helps skin and mood.

My daughter and myself are the same became severely dehyrated after our brand of Levothyroxine was changed to one with mannitol in it nearly three years on still not back to normal.
