Our findings confirm the importance of testing thyroid function in these patients, as already recommended by the guidelines on diagnosis and management of [acute heart failure],” the researchers concluded. “In addition, future studies should be considered to evaluate the treatment of selected patients with [acute heart failure] who could benefit from a T3 replacement approach.”

There have been a number of studies that have shown low T3 syndrome is associated with cardiac failure and death but it is not known whether low T3 is a cause or a protective mechanism.

This paper of ours shows that there are two sorts of changes to thyroid function; one is protective (lower FT3) and the other is more serious (i.e. out of control). Open to download.

I should add, in case anyone with low T3 gets unduly worried, that most of the heart attack deaths in the study I mentioned were over 80 years of age.
