Best T3 Medication

Hi there,

My 6 year old daughter who has been on Eltroxin for a year now is either going to have T3 added to her thyroxine or switch to Armour. I was wondering people’s thoughts on which would be best. If we were to add T3 is there a brand that is usually favoured?

Some of you have read previous posts on my daughters health which is very complex. Together with Hashimotos, she has SVT and has now tested positive for Mycotoxins and Lymes/Co infections

T3. ....For continuity of supply and more endocrinologists are prepared to prescribe T3

Also more flexible in that you can adjust proportions

3 brands available with U.K. license

Teva - 20mcg - lactose free

Mercury Pharma 20mcg

Morningside healthcare 5mcg, 10mcg and 20mcg tablets

Which ever brand, it’s best to start VERY slowly on T3.

Maximum of 5mcg added alongside levothyroxine

Possibly/probably starting on 2.5mcg

Has her endocrinologist trialed liquid levothyroxine?

Often better tolerated and absorbed than levothyroxine tablets

Obviously all four vitamins need to be optimal before considering adding T3

Which vitamins? Have you heard of Thybon? That’s what is being recommended?

Important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least annually

Endocrinologist presumably done these

Has she had coeliac blood test

Is she on gluten free diet

Is she lactose intolerant?

Yes vitamins done by paediatrician at my request.

She is GF and DF now. Negative for lactose intolerance and celiac.

I’ve just started on thybon as this is what my endo had access to which he said he was happy with quality wise

As this will be prescribed and dispensed in the UK, I'd have to say that the availability of 5, 10 and 20 microgram tablets in Morningside (and no other UK make) would be a significant factor.

The ability to dose accurately (at least to the nearest 5 micrograms) without splitting tablets is likely to be a big reassurance for you.

Her Dr is in Ireland. Recommends Thybon?

Many do very well on Thybon Henning. (Though it only comes in 20 and the extraordinarily high 100 microgram dosages.)

Are you in the UK? (You mentioned UK hospital, etc.) If so, you might find it relatively difficult/expensive to get hold of Thybon Henning.

That is, it is the practical, day to day issues which unfortunately cannot be 100% ignored.

We are in the UK but the Dr we eventually found who is very up on thyroid health and functional medicine is in Ireland.

Assuming private prescription

Thybon Henning is £1 per tablet from specialist pharmacies in U.K. and at 20mcg needs to be cut into 1/4’s

Possibly Irish medic can get at cheaper cost.

Pre Brexit Thybon Henning 20mcg were 31 euro for 100 tablets for U.K. patients

U.K. T3

Morningside healthcare 5mcg T3 are £98 per 28 tablets

10mcg are £148 per 28 tablets

All three brands

20mcg are £136 per 28 tablets

Hence why so difficult for U.K. patients to get prescribed

Are the better brand more expensive? Do you know which one has the least fillers?

The three UK brands are pretty much the same prices.

What do you mean by "least fillers"?

The most important issue is not the actual amount of fillers in total, nor how many there are, but what they are. And whether they are well tolerated.

If someone cannot tolerate one of the ingredients, then the number of other ingredients, and the amounts of them, really don't matter. :-(

Morningside liothyronine tablets are pretty small - all three dosages are 5.5 mm diameter. I do not have dimensions for Mercury Pharma and Teva.

Did you get anywhere at Addenbrooke’s? Did they check for RTH?

Both levothyroxine and liothyronine tablets are nearly all fillers simply because the dose is in microgrammes and you wouldn’t be able to see it let alone pick it up! I wouldn’t worry about fillers unless she definitely has a specific allergy.

I’ve seen somewhere it could take six weeks but COVID might have an effect. If you can get access to her records online do so as you can check it has been sent.
