Mannitol in Solgar B12 (Methylcobalamin)

β€’13 Replies

Hi All,

If like me you feel ill on Levo' that contains Mannitol, please check your supplements.

I realised this morning that my returning thyroid symptoms, that were identical to those I had when on Teva, could be due to the mannitol in my Solgar B12 supplement, not the change in my Levothyroxine manufacturer. To be safe I am still getting my prescription changed to state the Levo' that suited me better, which I have been informed is 'more expensive' than the ones produced by the companies that supply Teva/Accord brands under different names.

Thanks for that information, just checked my vitamins and the one you mentioned does indeed contain Mannitol been taking it for about 3 or 4 months, I had changed my thyroxine from teva to my old brand because I was having symptoms mentioned by several people on here but problems had not cleared completely, so have gone back to a mouth spray for B12. I hope this helps. Thanks again for highlighting it.

You're welcome, hope you feel better soon! Just 2 days after stopping the Solgar B12 (Methylcobalamin) I am feeling less sluggish/tearful, today I didn't wake up with a thumping headache, I look forward to my swollen eyelids returning to normal πŸ™‚x

The levothyroxine tablets available in the UK have identical NHS Tariff prices across all makes.

bnf.nice.org.uk/medicinal-f...

I have no idea how the price paid by a pharmacy to a wholesaler might vary by make.

Also, I am a touch confused. Accord levothyroxine does NOT contain mannitol.

β€’ in reply tohelvella

I didn't say accord contained mannitol, just it was produced by the same company as Teva.My chemist has told me that Mercury Pharma/Eltroxin is more expensive and he needs a specific prescription to order it. I have no reason to believe he would make that up.

β€’ in reply to

I have looked at the list you gave the link for! It doesn't even have the 100 mg Mercury pharma on it, so I assume my chemist could be correct.

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorβ€’ in reply to

It DOES have Mercury Pharma 100 microgram tablets on the list. The name to look for is Advanz Pharma. That is the company name which you can also see on the Patient Information Leaflet for the products.

All 100 microgram levothyroxine tablets have the same Β£1.24 NHS Drug Tariff Price. But, as I said earlier, what the pharmacy pays might vary.

But Accord levothyroxine is produced by Accord and has nothing to do with Teva. Which is how it initially read in your reply.

There are "own label suppliers" as described below.

Your chemist is far from correct! Teva Pharmaceuticals and Accord are completely different companies, and have never been connected. Mercury Pharma levo is not an expensive brand, in fact it is the one normally dispensed by Boots as its standard 25mcg levo tablet, with Teva given when Mercury is unavailable. There is very little difference, if any, between the prices charged to the NHS for standard generic levo tablets by any NHS-supplying company, so I am perplexed as to why your chemist has made these statements.

If you go into search health unlocked and put teva brand in you will find previous posts about the brand.

I can assure you I research research research, there is a lot of conflicting info' especially between those that have it and the professionals that don't. Having dealt with this for over 31 years with misdiagnosis from Dr's only getting the correct diagnosis after 11 years, being left with lasting effects from a long time undiagnosed underactive thyroid. I could write a very long list of what it has caused.Teva made me very ill, I researched and found the connection to mannitol.

Quite frankly I am finding the replies to my post (meant to help people) upsetting in there tone, it feels like I am being attacked, but then I do have an underactive thyroid that makes me sensitive/depressed when something interferes with the medication, what was meant to help people seems to have backfired, it feels like a personal attack, for my mental wellbeing while I get back to some form of normal (never as 'normal' as before an underactive thyroid) I am coming off this page, it certainly isn't helping me ATM

I am sorry you have deleted yourself because members were only trying to help. We do know how you feel because we have all been there. This is the best site in the UK for people with thyroid disease and without the help and support from other sufferers I don't know what I would do. I have never had any kind of help from the medical profession and I think a lot of us feel thyroid disease is sadly neglected by them.

Sorry you are not happy with posts we are only trying to help, I myself have had a under active thyroid for over 60 odd years, since early child hood. We realise how you feel because we have all been through it.
