Vitamin D

Hi all,

I'm struggling with taking vitamin D. When I take it it makes the whirring noise in my left ear really loud that it keeps me awake at night. I've only suffered with this since being on levothyroxine. As a result my vitamin D levels have dropped because I haven't been taking it because the noise drives me insane but am now feeling the effects of lacking in vitamin D. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there any others ways of getting vitamin d? I've tried cod liver oil and it does the same and there are only so many eggs and mushrooms a person can eat and I'm not great with fish.

Do the lamps work? Are they worth investing in?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Low vitamin D and low B vitamins often go together

Have you had B12 and folate levels tested

Are you currently taking any other vitamins?

My B12 is 49.7 so still not overly great. For some reason they didn't do the folate this time (used medichecks) they did last time back in May and it was 5.85. Trouble is I had to stop taking the high strength b12 because the ingredients didn't agree with me and made me feel really ill so only taking a low dose at the moment. I just seem really sensitive to fillers. I am taking magnesium and having epsom baths as I read that having low magnesium could cause the problem with the vitamin D. My thyroid levels have dropped slightly also so going to up them. I was going to post them but can't figure out how to post them in the comments!

Your B12 is EXTREMELY low

So low you really should have full testing for Pernicious Anaemia

Medichecks have stopped testing folate on DIY finger prick test

Blue horizon or Thriva do include folate normally....but currently there’s a temporary shortage of folate test kits.

Active B12 under 70 is considered suspicious for PA

Ask GP to do full testing. You may need B12 injections

Once tested if GP doesn’t start B12 injections

supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid) may be beneficial.

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and will help improve B12 levels too

Difference between folate and folic acid

chriskresser.com/folate-vs-...

Many Hashimoto’s patients have MTHFR gene variation and can have trouble processing folic acid.

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Igennus Super B is good quality and cheap vitamin B complex. Contains folate. Full dose is two tablets per day. Many/most people may only need one tablet per day. Certainly only start on one per day (or even half tablet per day for first couple of weeks)

Or Thorne Basic B or jarrow B-right are other options that contain folate, but both are large capsules

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results

Low B12 symptoms

With such low B12 result taking a B12 supplement as well as a B Complex (to balance all the B vitamins) initially for first 2-4 months, then once your serum B12 is over 500 (or Active B12 level has reached 70), stop the B12 and just carry on with the B Complex.

How low is Vitamin D?

GP will often only prescribe to bring levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

But with Hashimoto’s, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function. There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with hashimoto’s we frequently need higher dose than average

With your Vit D, are you also taking it's important cofactors - magnesium and Vit K2-MK7?

Magnesium best taken in the afternoon or evening, but must be four hours away from levothyroxine

Vit D level is 39! I will call the drs tomorrow to see if i can get the PA test.

It was the ingennus super b I couldn't take, think it might have been the glycerol in them that made me ill.

Thank you for all the information, i will sit and look through it all.

Did you start with just 1/2 or even 1/4 of Igennus tablet AFTER food?

Hookie01 profile image
Hookie01 in reply toSlowDragon

I used to take 1 after breakfast

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toHookie01

Either try a 1/4 tablet

Or try different brand

GP should do testing for PA first before starting any B vitamins

I will phone the drs tomorrow! Sadly half the battle is if they will answer the phone!!

Thank you

TSH 2.57 (0.27-4.2)

Free T3 4.03 (3.1-6.8)

Free Thyroxine 16.1 (12-22)

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking

Do you always get same brand?

Ft4 is only 41% through range

Ft3 only 25% through range

Helpful calculator for working out percentage through range

chorobytarczycy.eu/kalkulator

Results show you are under medicated and need 25mcg dose increase in levothyroxine

Bloods should be retested 6-8 weeks after each dose change or brand change in levothyroxine

Aiming for Ft3 as minimum around 60% through range

Low vitamin levels are direct result of being under medicated and low stomach acid as direct result

Low vitamin levels tend to lower TSH And poor conversion of Ft4 to Ft3

I currently take 125/150 alternate days. I'm going to up to 150. I take the same brand all the time as can't tolerate other brands so I'm very careful on that.

I’ve had that issue with Vit D too, lots of ringing and buzzing in the ear. Not pleasant

Hookie01 profile image
Hookie01 in reply toWired123

It really isn't pleasant is it, it drives me insane. Makes me want to cry! I take it you didn't manage to resolve it?

Wired123 profile image
Wired123 in reply toHookie01

Simply have to ease off it or reduce the dose. I’ve stopped taking it for 2 weeks and less buzzing/ringing.

It could be that it’s too much vitamin D inside our body so we are over supplementing.

Hookie01 profile image
Hookie01 in reply toWired123

I stopped taking it and it eased off but my levels have gone down to 39 so definitely not too much in my system. Really feeling the effects of being too low.

Wired123 profile image
Wired123 in reply toHookie01

Are you still getting the buzzing and ringing sounds now you’ve stopped taking the supps?

Hookie01 profile image
Hookie01 in reply toWired123

Its still there but its hardly noticeable and doesn't keep me awake at night.
