No vitamin D at 42nmol is below range of 50-150

vitamin D - GP should prescribe 1600iu everyday for 6 months

NHS Guidelines on dose vitamin D required

ouh.nhs.uk/osteoporosis/use...

GP will often only prescribe Vitamin D to bring levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But with Hashimoto’s, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly via vitamindtest.org.uk

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function. There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with hashimoto’s we frequently need higher dose than average

Calculator for working out dose you may need to bring level to 40ng/ml = 100nmol

Government recommends everyone supplement October to April

With your Vit D, are you also taking it's important cofactors - magnesium and Vit K2-MK7?

Magnesium best taken in the afternoon or evening, but must be four hours away from levothyroxine

Thank you - I am not taking any meds at the moment as only just got these results. I was told to wait 6 weeks for a re-test and not advised to take any Vitamins. I have ongoing hair loss over several weeks and fatigue. Have adjusted my diet and made inroads with energy levels but do you recommend that I take Vit D and magnesium supplements straight away before re-test. I will look at having further tests done to check vitamin levels etc.

Only start one supplement at a time and then wait 10-14 days before adding another

Recommend getting vitamin D mouth spray that includes vitamin K2

Thyroid test - you need thyroid antibodies tested

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is caused by autoimmune thyroid disease diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/286...

Vitamin D deficiency is frequent in Hashimoto's thyroiditis and treatment of patients with this condition with Vitamin D may slow down the course of development of hypothyroidism and also decrease cardiovascular risks in these patients. Vitamin D measurement and replacement may be critical in these patients.

Evidence of a link between increased level of antithyroid antibodies in hypothyroid patients with HT and 25OHD3 deficiency may suggest that this group is particularly prone to the vitamin D deficiency and can benefit from its alignment.

You are clinically deficient in Vit.D, so I am not at all sure why your GP did not immediately prescribe a supplement. However, it is now important not to take any supplement prior to your next test, as it will not be accurate, and will not lead to any prescription once you are within range, however low your result may be. Vit.D deficiency is common with hypothyroidism, and can cause debilitating symptoms such as fatigue and body pain. I feel best with my level at the top of the range; when my bone pain returns, I know my level has dropped. My preferred maintenance dosage is 5,000 iu D3 daily, with a return to 10,000 iu daily if I think it necessary.
