Could this be thyroid related? Rainbow colours took over vision for around thirty minutes- retinal migraine- no actual head migraine.

Hi everyone,

I take 4 grains of NDT each morning. Been on this dose for a few months and feeling a lot better. Last night I was a sat in bed reading when a rainbow type image came across my vision, a small like to begin with before expanding and taking over the vision in both eyes. This lasted around 30 minutes and I was terrified. I then had a white rectangle left in my vision for sometime after.

Has any else experienced this? Could it be linked to my thyroid?

Thanks x

Hi Elmo

Occasionally I have something similar. Last time it was like a streak of lightning across my vision and was the same in both eyes. I got it to clear up in about half an hour or so.

It can happen if I sit badly (usually at the computer) or if I bend my head back to look at something high up such as a high bookshelf or reaching up too high in the garden.

For me this has been diagnosed as 'vertebro basilar insufficiency' (VBI) where distortion of the spine puts pressure on the artery leading to the cerebellum at the back of the brain and reducing blood flow, which can then result in various problems. I try to describe it as having the spinal column like a string of beads which is a bit loose round the neck, so can get slightly out of alignment.

When I first had it I was also getting balance problems, but these days I am extra careful. I had a minor op and insisted that they supported my neck so that it didn't happen when I was under the anaesthetic. I make sure the dentist supports my neck well.

I have found a cranial osteopath who is really helpful and I have some exercises which I can use straight away.

It's not a thyroid issue for me. I did plenty of googling before I came across VBI which seemed to fit my symptoms, but may not fit yours.

It might be worth mentioning it next time you have your eyes tested.

When you were reading in bed did you scrunch your neck up?

I hope this is helpful. Sorry it's rather long winded.

I have this sometimes and it's known as a "silent" migraine. It's quite alarming the first time it happens but now I'm just grateful not to have a headache with it!

I do believe it is thyroid related - but you have to be susceptible in the first place.

I had one recently, and it was when my thyroid level was slightly off. First I had in quite a while (many months).

Your description is pretty good!

When I was initially titrating my dose, around ten years ago, I had quite a number. That is why I am so sure it is thyroid related.

Because of this long history, with the one I had the other night I sat on the sofa thinking how incredibly pretty it was! :-) Honestly, if you can, it is much more pleasant than worrying about something that you can't do much about.

(I do feel a bit washed out, slightly nauseous, and not quite right as the visual effects fade. But no headache.)

I completely agree with what the above replies say. I get visual migraines myself...usually no headache. For me they happen after stress....not during. At first they were very disconcerting, frightening even. Once I knew what they were, less so. I get a spate of them if I need to adjust my medication or supplements.

However, I think it should be said that if these symptoms are new to you..... it may be a good plan to check with a competent doctor (good luck with that!) or at least get checked at a decent opticians to rule out other possibilities.

Your point about "after stress" is good. I am not at all sure that I have detected that pattern for me, but others I know who get migraines (visual or full) have said that many times.

Hi I am sure migraine and visual disturbances are attributed sometimes to thyroid. Before having my thyroid removed I had visual disturbances, half a nose an ear funny things moving in my eyes then slight headache which got worse over time. Had atleast 1 a month for a few years. Since having my thyroid removed 3 years ago, and this is the only positive thing I can say, no more visual disturbances or migraine. So yes connected

I get a migraine aura with similar zigzag patterns going on in my eyes/vision, often 2-6 times a month, but rarely get the headache. These started about 10 years ago when I was in my early sixties, when I was young I used to get full blown migraines with nausea and headache, but these seemed to stop when I reached the menopause. I don't know how old you are, but understand that these can occur as just the aura in later life, it is apparently a power surge from somewhere in the brain. Usually they affect me for 20 minutes to half an hour in the accute stage, but after just feel a bit jaded and sometimes get a stiff neck for 24 hours or so.

I have never been told it is linked to the thyroid, and I have been hypo for 25 years.

You probably should have your retina looked at. There are several things that can happen with your retina that can cause unusual lights and shapes to appear. My husband has had retina issues for some time now and always gets into his retina specialist when things like this appear.

When I have eye tests, always mention my auras, and nothing so far wrong in my eyes apart from being long sighted. Will ask again at next test to double check. Thanks.
