Questions for Men of the Forum

Men of the forum in treatment. What improvement did you experience with treatment? What treatment worked best? How did you get to the treatment plan you’re on now?

Over in the women’s corner we came to an unfortunate conclusion that there could have been a gender bias in our treatment options. So we would like to see what options men have/ had so that we could potentially improve the situation hopefully for both genders.

While I am sure some women have received appalling treatment I can assure you that my treatment was pretty bad. Doctors had been monitoring my thyroid function for at least 7 years without my knowledge before they told me that there was a problem. I too was fobbed off with all the usual cliches, its your age ( 35 ), your depressed, eat less move more ( at the time I was cycling over 100 miles a week, climbing steel structures for a living and hill walking at the weekends. Within 10 years I had been pensioned off due to ill health and using a wheelchair to get around. T4 didn't work well for me, endocrinology refused to see me and I now self medicate with NDT.

Oh my god! I’m so sorry to hear that! This is all simply ridiculous and seriously has to stop. 35 is hardly an age to lose energy and be disabled due to age. You know I wonder if the issue is the specialization of the medical profession in general. The treatment is not adequate because the field of Endocrinology is limited.

Hi me too, in the beginning I thought I had hashimoto, lucky research and accidentally finding this site helped. Saw gp he had to look it up on on google and then told me it was unlikely I had it. He then couldn’t find anything wrong with me. The upshot was I then spent 3 months in a semi coma sleeping 16 hrs a day and feeling like I had been run over by several buses.

Not good when you run your own business. I’m in a much better place now but it’s taken 8 years and almost no help from endo or gp. The whole system is broken and full of robot docs just waiting for their fat pension.

Sorry if this sounds bitter

Oh wow, I’m sorry to hear that! It really seems like there is no help out there and I can totally relate to the running your business and not being able to. Luckily I got a business partner (with his own problems that he gets very little help with), but at least we can rely on each other when each of our issues strike.

I’m glad you found something that works. I think this forum has helped more than any doctor for me.

T4 never worked for me even at 300mcg my tsh was off the chart.

I now use Thai NDT the highest I've used was 6 grains no sides and found fat loss ok. After several years I went down as low as 4 due to tendon and muscle aches which I thought were due to too much t3 despite the blood work being ok. On 4 my tsh was high again.

Currently on 5 a day. I find my appetite is very high no matter what does I take.

My current endo is a women she's ok with ndt but i source it myself I'm not sure how hard it would have been to get a script for it probably impossible as it was on the NHS. She was also happy to give me testosterone replacement which again is usually hardwork on the NHS.

Interesting you mention joint pain, I wonder if that is from T3 or something else? If anything NDT helped me with joint pain, but maybe it’s by individual. I also settled between 4 and 5 NDT. I can get by on 3, but 4 is better. My new doctor actually tried to prescribe NDT, but it’s out of stock everywhere and has been discontinued, which is a total bummer. She prescribed Armour, but the tiny dose is not doing much as of now.
