Omg how do some doctors get a degree

just taken my 15 yo daughter to doct as has history of low b12 and iron, her injections were stopped last year on a paediatrician advice and to monitor every 3 months which we have been doing and have stayed pretty stable even though she tested positive to parietal cell antibody, shes been complaining of late of headaches poor concentration, joint pain and her hands and feet are always freezing, couldn't get in with usual doct but she was due for retest, already had form for b12, folate and iron but wanted to add thyroid test, pretty much had to twist his arm to do so, said there was only need to test tsh if anything and that test was unnecessary , omg did he not look at her history and the fact i have hashimotis , he told her to eat more red meat and reluctantly gave me form, so not happy right now, my daughter actually asked me to make her an appointment , his attitude was why start looking for stuff that might not be there, im pretty certain that her symptoms are due to her iron or b12 as 2 months back ferreton had dropped to 36 range 30 - 200, i just want piece of mind its not thyroid, cant believe how blazay he was, never be going back to him, rant over

Getting any tests not done by GP via Blue horizon looks like your next step

BH will test minors

What’s your daughters diet like?

Diet not too bad, she eats chicken, steak, salad, cereal not a big junk food fan, drinks plenty of water, im guessing like Marz says about the PA, just had bloods done this arvo and seeing her normal doct on friday for results

She has PA - and needs injections for life. It is auto-immune and the anti-bodies are attacking her Parietal cells. There is a PAS Forum here on HU. Sorry in a rush ...

thankyou yes im on that forum she tested negative to the intrinsic factor but positive to the parietal and celiac was negative

So you know from the PAS Forum that her regular injections are very important. Could she self-inject ?

Yes im seeing doct on friday and going to quiz her more as my understanding with positive parietal antibodies is that she will have trouble absorbing iron and b12

More importantly it confirms PA - which means B12 injections for life. Do read up on if before you see the GP as they are poorly informed on PA and treat inadequately. There are some excellent Pinned Posts on the PAS Forum and the website of the Pernicous Anaemia Society has a section on information for GP's.

Yes Iron can often be a problem too - and Folate.

Do you have any idea why paediatrician stopped the B12 injections? Without good reason it doesn't sound like a good plan. Definitely check it out with the pernicious anaemia society they are the experts.

She was supposed to see a gastrologist originally but for some reason got a general peads he suggested to stop and see what her levels did and that she may not require the injections for life, so going on the advice we did this and continue to check every 3 months, i will get results friday if they have dropped i will be questioning, all else fails i think i will pay to see private gut doctor that hopefully knows what hes on about.

So did he say give you evidence that parietal cells had recovered? Did he say what percentage of people are known to recover from parietal cell destruction? If it were me, I'd just want a lot more informed information and research evidence for his decisions. It all sounds like he's experimenting although this may not be the case at all. I would just want some evidential reasoning to support his advice.

Yes i know i just figured her being so young that he knew best however being autoimmune myself i do question as my understanding once you have antibodies they are there for life, hopefully i get better informed on friday with her results .

Hi

So sorry about the dreadful treatment your daughter has received, it's a disgrace, but not surprising sadly. If you get nowhere tomorrow was ok to speak with your practice manager and put in complaint!

Look up Dr Chandy whocis an expert on B12 and has his own website on line and get doc to check

FT4, FT3 RT3, Ferritin (iron) and full iron panel, Vitamin D, TPO, Tgab antibodies which would tell you if she has Hashimotos. Antibodies may appear one month or not the next, up and sown all the time, just like TSH. Doesn't mean she won't have Hashimotos because the antibodies are not there on one blood test.

These docs don't know about optimal vitamins or optimal ranges. Ask for copies of bloods rather than accept result over the phone, although you probably already know this.

Good luck tomorrow.
