As far as I know the NHS position on NDT is that it has no place in the treatment of hypothyroidism.

Thank you.

What Zazbag says is quite true, but there is at least one locations in UK where an NHS consultant (NOT AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST!) has been given full authority to prescribe NHS on private prescription to hypo patients. From certain documents I have received, I am aware that the consultant endocrinologist at the same NHS hospital if fully aware of this and agrees with the treatment being given, yet fails to follow the INSTRUCTION he has been given by the GMC to inform ALL patients of anything that may assist in their treatment if he is aware of it. I don't know how he sleeps at night.

I believe this policy does not relate simply to a single CCG, but to a substantial part of England, but patients only find out about it if they complain continuously (or read this forum!) and don't simply give up in disgust at the NHS about not being prescribed something that actually will relieve them of their residual hypo symptoms.

The endo may fear for his job if he follows the GMC instruction, but I have nothing to fear for telling the truth. ALL CCG's should stick to telling the truth as well and, if they cannot tell the truth on the recommendation they give to all doctors in the UK, they should stop issuing any recommendations at all for NDT, just like the Royal College of Physicians did a few years ago when they had so many complaints about their recommendation on NDT that they declined to issue any more. Perhaps they used this as a convenient excuse when they examined the reasons given by others for the blacklisting of NDT and realised what a load of b****cks each one of them actually is.

Big fat ‘No’ is the answer from my Endo. So sadly I buy my own NDT from abroad.

So unfair that we’re denied something that makes us feel well.

I tried going back on just levothyroxine a few weeks ago. Within a fortnight I was back on NDT mixed with levo. I’ll be telling my endo that I’ll continue to self medicate. She can lump it 😂 At least I gave it a go!

Thank you everyone. I cant continue like this so I’ve treated myself to Thyro-Gold. Let’s hope it makes me feel somewhat human. Anyone else taking Thyro-Gold?

Not what you're looking for?
