Is anyone finding success with the paleo ketone diet to keep their weight under control?
Paleo Ketone Diet: Is anyone finding success with... - Thyroid UK
Paleo Ketone Diet
I gained 6 stone in 2 years after my thyroid removed, i tried everything WW slimming world, lighterlife, calorie counting, 5:2 everything, nothing worked. A friend lost loads on keto so i gave it a go, to begin with i was nervous how much food, butter, cream, full fat as i had been busy cutting all that out, i was already gluten, sugar and alcohol free so not much more i could give up!
2 years later i lost the 6 stone, however if i fall off the wagon and eat a bit of bread, the craving is unbearable, like any addiction, if i eat biscuits i eat the packet and i can easily gain half a stone in a week! if i stick to 20-30gms of carbs a day i can easily maintain my weight loss. Downside is i no longer eat out or accept dinner invites, its just too hard even after all this time to be surrounded by carbs and not eat them. If your serious about losing weight it is brilliant but if you sabotage weekly it wont work. xx
Hi, yes I am currently having success, having had huge problems losing weight in the past apart from the 5:2 diet. I couldn't sustain 5:2 as it was too severe.
However I combine the PK diet with missing breakfast so that there is a prolonged daily fast, which is good for the body. This is advocated by Dr Myhill.
The PK diet seems very difficult as it excludes dairy, but through much experimentation, I've devised a mixture of alternative milks that tastes just like creamy milk. I'm still eating cheese in moderation but will be trying vegan cheeses.
Although the diet is predicated on low carbs, it is important not to omit them altogether and to test ketones to ensure the body doesn't go into starvation mode (I use a breath meter). This is crucial for those who are hypo as this could have an impact on FT3 levels.
It's possible that others on the forum would advise against a PK diet for this very reason so I would say that you would probably need to be careful and make sure you had TFTs tested to check there isn't a negative impact.
Incidentally, there have also been other positive outcomes for me as the diet has corrected the problems wrought by an allergy I didn't realise I had! Dr Myhill identified it, which means that two surgeries I had in the past which didn't solve the difficulties had not been needed!
Hi, l am 6 weeks into a Paleo diet and loving it! Not aiming to lose weight but to reduce inflammation shown by plasma viscosity levels). I don’t seem to put on weight, but that seems to be an issue with not being able to absorb fat which has its own problems as l also don’t seem to absorb the good vitamins and minerals l eat.
I have been alcohol, caffeine, gluten and dairy free for several years and now cut out white potatoes, rice and pulses as well as nightshade veg. I feel l have plenty of choice and am having fun trying new recipes with a range of flours (chestnut, almond, coconut, flaxseed etc), eating lots of eggs, veg, fruit, fish and meat. Early days for seeing any clinical results but feels a very clean diet and my stomach seems happier!
I’ve been in the PK for 2 Months and lost 2.5 stone. Moreover my energy has come back my IBS has gone and my skin looks amazing
I have only 1-2 meals a day and use fasting to help weight loss which there is a lot of research on with associated heath benefits.
I’ve cut out dairy and feel so much better. Allergies all gone.
I am a good cook so don’t feel deprived. I eat lots of green salads with chicken and salmon and prawns with my soy yoghurt dressing I make with mint and lemon juice.
I eat steak and lamb with dark green veg
I make my own rosemary Linseed crackers that are yummy when you fancy something crunchy.
I don’t have any sugar or artificial sweetener and do t miss it. I take multivitamins and high dose Vit c and d and zinc daily via Dr Myhill. I also am
On metavive. Would totally recommend
Not for me . Bowels are the best they have ever been. As I said I’d recommend linseed crackers. Linseed is a fantastic source of fibre. Dr Myhill makes a linseed bread which I have made but it’s hard to get right. I prefer the crackers and it’s so easy to make. Good luck 😉
Excellent! Can’t wait for the book to arrive so I can make a start.
Thank you for responding.
