Neuropathy
Hi Lo06
I’ve been telling my docs here, that I’ve been having ant crawling sensations in my left leg, then I had hyperparathyroidism surgery last week, now both legs numb, feels like an hey for ants on my legs!! NUEROPATHY??? Or a screwed up side effect!
How long have you been on theses meds? You might need something different?.
It’s definitely not Levothyroxine as I have been on them for over 4 years ... I will need to get my bloods checked
I very much doubt it's your levo that's causing this effect - poor old levo gets blamed for everything, and is usually innocent!
More likely to be nutritional deficiencies: calcium, or magnesium or B12, or something. They need to be tested to find out your levels.
Could be Restless Leg Syndrome especially if worse at night. Antidepressants such as sertraline can cause RLS In some individuals.
Just a thought it is suggested on the Mayo clinic that a simple Iron tablet may help as low iron can definitely affect restless legs syndrome i am going to try it myself
Ant crawling (formication - careful with that one!) is commonly a B12 deficiency symptom. As you have gone numb I would be looking to see a neurologist, particularly for testing for Small Fibre Neuropathy. This can have many causes but B12/folate can be one. You may find that you have something like an MTHFR genetic variant making it harder for you to get B12/folate into the cells where you need it. Best not supplement either until properly tested but don't assume 'in range' means no issue, as not the case. Certainly wasn't for me. MTHFR is only one of several possibilities, and SNPs affect each other so you need to look at all symptoms and the whole picture. Cheers
Thanks for the tips I think as you say I will check with my Dr as it was a foliate which helped when I was anaemic and I think you can only get that through prescription but I will try B12 to see if it improves things as lack of sleep with these leg sensations is quite debilitating
supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid) may be beneficial.
This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and will help maintain B12 levels too

Many Hashimoto’s patients have MTHFR gene variation and can have trouble processing folic acid.

B vitamins best taken after breakfast
Igennus Super B is good quality and cheap vitamin B complex. Contains folate. Full dose is two tablets per day. Many/most people may only need one tablet per day. Certainly only start on one per day (or even half tablet per day for first couple of weeks)
Or Thorne Basic B or jarrow B-right are other options that contain folate, but both are large capsules
If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results

You may need separate folate supplement as well
