I wish there were more men with thyroid disease because I think it might then be taken more seriously by the medical profession. Not that I would wish this on anyone but I think if more men had this there would be more research and better treatment.
Tend to agree. The most authoritarian, inflexible docs I've met, have been male.
Hi there probably is a stack of them out there, problem is I think it’s seen as a female problem. The first GP I had said it was very very very unlikely for a man to have thyroid issues. I raised the question of hashimotos and he looked it up on google and said no definitely not. I have had every blood test going in the last 7 years and still my endo doesn’t really get it. You’ve gotta laugh
When you're REALLY sick, it's not a laughing matter! The stats I've read say that the male:female ratio for thyroid problems is 1:8. After I had had it with MDs, I went to a naturopath and got a proper diagnosis. The extent of MD ignorance about how to test and fix thyroid problems, is huge. Most of these guys don't even look at thyroid antibodies when someone comes into their office with thyroid symptoms, and most of them are stuck in the TSH/T4 diagnosis/treatment fallacy.
I have been offered counseling and antidepressants by male doctors for my thyroid disease. I am not saying all doctors that are men think the same but they see a middle aged overweight woman and wrongly assume it is the menopause, or they are overeating or they are depressed when infact they just need their thyroid disease treating.
